JOHN S. BODGE.
Improvement in LiftingJaCks.
N0. 12 5,7811, V Pat en ted April16,1872.
JOHN S. BODGE, OF LA FORTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,784, dated April 16, 1872.
' SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. BODGE, of La Porte, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Jacks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference=being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a liftingjack, as will be hereinafter morefully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my lifting-jack.
A A represent two of the legs of my lifting-jack, which are connected together in V 'form by means of one or more cross-bars, 13. Between the upper ends of the legs A A is pivoted the third leg 0, the upper end of which extends a short distance above the legs A A, as shown. To this end of the leg 0 is attached a chain or perforated strap, D, which is to be passed through the wheel to be raised or around the axle, and the end of the chain or strap hooked onto a hook or pin, a, on said leg 7 O. The leg 0 is then brought down in the position shown, until a bail, b, pivoted to the legs A A, is brought down to catch on a pin, (1, on the leg 0, thus holding the entire jack firmly on the ground, the weight of the article raised having the tendency to plant it more firmly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a lifting-jack having three legs, and one of the legs used as the lifting-lcver, I claim a strap, chain, or its equivalent, to attach to the article to he raised, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the legs A A and O, strap or chain D or its equivalent, bail b, and pins a d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. BODGE. Witnesses:
JOHN DAVIS, E. L. SMITH.
