" To all whom it may'concern:
Be it known that T, WILLIAM BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovementsin Handles for Air-Brake Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved air brake valve handle particularly designedfor use upon street cars andv has as its primary object to provide a handle which may be clamped upon the valve stem so that the said handle cannot become accidentally displaced when manipulating the valve.
The invention has as a. further object to provide a handle which may be readily applied to substantially any conventional type of air brake valve as commonly employed upon street cars. y
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a handle wherein the grip thereof may be adjusted for clamping the handle upon a valve stem.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved handle applied to a conventional type of air brake valve stem,

in carrying out the invention, my improved handle -is formed with a head 10 provided with a squared socket 11 for receiving the stem of an air brake valve therethrough, as illustrated in Fig. 1. In this figure such a valve stem has been conventionally shown at 12. The head 10 is split longitudinally and extending from the extremities thereof are the complemental sections of a shank 13 extending laterally from the head. arm each carry one section of a laterallydi rected lug 17 pro ecting forwardly from the said arm. The arm 16 and lug 17 are arranged to cooperate in the well known manner with the usual stop flange upon the casing of the brake valve to prevent the removal of the handle from the stem 12 except in the neutral position of the valve.
Removably fitting over the outer extremity of the shank 13 is a hollow cylindrical grip 18 provided interiorly with an internally threaded ring 19. The outer extremity of the shank 13 is threaded to coact with this ring so that the grip is thus adjustable upon the shank.
As will now be seen, the grip 18 may be adjusted outwardly upon the shank 13 when the bowed portions of the sections of the said shank will spring apart to spread the head 10 so that the said head may thus he easilyfitted upon or removed from the valve stem 12. On the other hand, by adjusting the grip inwardly upon the shank, the bowed portions of the sections thereof will be com pressed to consequently compress the head and securely grip the said head about the valve stem. Accidental displacement of the handle when manipulating the valve may thus be positively prevented.
It will therefore be seen that I provide a particularly simple and etlicient construction for the burpose set forth and while I have indicated that the improved handle is particularly designed for use upon the air brake valves of street cars still, I do not wish to be limited in this regard as it will be seen that the handle may be employed upon air brake valves in various other situations.
Having thus described the invention, wha is claimed as new is:
1. A brake valve handle including a split head, a sectional shank having the sections thereof extending from the extremities of the said head and yieldably connected by '10 for clamping the head about a valve stem.

and a grip adjustable upon the shank for compressing the bowed portions of the said shank sections and clamping the head about a valve stern.
5. A brake valve handle including a split head, a sectional shank having the sections thereof extending from the extremities of the head, the said shank sections being longitudinally bowed away from each other for yieldably spreading the ends of the head,
and means adjustable upon the shank for compressing the bowed portions of the said shank sections and clamping the head about a valve stein.
6. A brake valve handle including a head, a shank extending therefrom, the said shank being split longitudinally from a point adjacent its outer end through its inner end to provide coac-ting shank sections and the head being split between the inner ends of the saidjshank sections and yieldably connecting the adjacent extremities thereof, and means adjustable upon the shank to coact with the said shank sections for clamping the head about a valve stem.
