ram/ase the table top by a screw 91. The legs 90 are bent forwardly and then upwardly at their.` lower ends, where are formed two infverted Usshaped members 92 serving as a vertical support at the front side of the rack. From each of the adjacent legs of these inverted U-shaped members the wire leads baekwardly and upwardly at 94, where it is curved around the pedestal and looped over the screw 83. Here the wire is secured between. the washer 82 and the washer 95, bracing these curved wires and stilening the newspaper support. rlll`hus the legs 90 and 94 form one side of the support while the U members 92 form the other side, and the connecting portions at the lower ends of each of these form the bottom supports for the rack. l
lt will be seen Jfrom `the foregoing description that l have provided a reading stand comprisii'lg a table member on which any suitable articles may be laid; a rack for holding the reading matter. and an adjustable support for such rack which is carried on an offset arm adapted 'lo allow the rack to be swung laterally into a reading position over the side ol" a chair or bed. ft will also be noted that the long slot 33 in the web 3Q allows the rack lo be n'ioved 'lorward and back with relation to the center of the table` and the clamping member 30 permits the support te be adjusted to various angles with. relation to the table. The extensiblel members on the support are cour pact, simple and not apt to get out et order, as well as being adapted to be moved to a position entirely within the outline ot the, supporting nienrber itselit' and it will be noted that the suj'iport n'iay be collapsed to a position close to the table top and the lamp removed, permitting the table to be stored or shipped in small compass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. rlfhe combination, with a base, of a substantially dat support tor reading matter7 means rising from the base for carrying thc support, a pair of extensible members secured near the corners oil the support and having diagonal slots, means occupying said slots and loosely engaging the same allowing said members to be slid longitudinally of the slots from a position within the outline of said support to a position projecting outwardly beyond the top and ends of the same.
2. The combination with a support comprising a substantially flat member, a depending rib on the under side of said member having a` longitudinal slot, a stand, a movable arm carried by the stand7 a clampingI member swivclcd to said arm on a vertical pivot, aI bolt extending through the slot of the rib and carried by the clamping member, and means for clamping the elamoing member to the arm when the bolt is tightened to clamp the rib to the clamping member.
3. The combination, of a reading support comprising a substantially flat member7 a depending rib on the under side of said support and having a longitudinal slot,a clamp* ing member having a screw extending through said slot, an oll'set arm having an upwardly extending lug, said clamping member being hollow at its lower end and rotatably engaging said lug and being split vertically whereby said screw may act to tighten the clamping member onto both the rib and lug.
d. The combination, with a book support, of a device for carrying the same including means permitting it lo be moved transversely oi" the carrying means and brought 'to various slanting positions, said carrying means including an upright swivel member permitting the support to be rotated in a horizontal planta and a clamping device connected with the swivel member and adapted when tightened to prevent any of said movements ot the support.
In a reading stand, the combination of a boolrsiippoi-t, a depending rib on the under side et said support, av clamping mcmber engaging the rib, an upward projection about' which said clamping member may rotale in a horizontal plane, and a device for causing the clamping member at the same lime to tightly grip said rib and said projection.
(i. ln a reading stand, the combination ot a booksujmort, a depending rib on the under side et said support having a longitudinal slot, a clamping member engaging the side et' said rib and han ing a screw extending through said slot, anvupward projection rotatably engaged by said clamping me1n ber, and means whereby the clamping niember tightly grips said projection when the screw is tightened to clamp the rib.
7. ln a, reading support7 the combination of a substantially flat member, a depending rib on the under side of said member having a longitudinal slot, a bifurcated clamping member -embracing the sides oi said rib and having a lscrew extending through said slot, an upward projection rotatably embraced by said clamping member, A
means for preventing the removal of the clamping member from thevprojection, the clamping member being adapted to tightly grip said projection when the screw is tightened to clamp the rib.
ln testimony whereof, hereunto aliix my signature.
