METHOD OF CASTING FURNAGE FIRE-POTS.
Application filed March 13, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Jenn P. KoLLA, a citizen of the United States of America residing at Holland, in the county of Utta'Wa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful luiprovements in Methods of (lasting Furnace Fire-Pots; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the ii'ivention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a method of casting furnace fire pots. It is an object and purpose of the present invention to produce a furnace fire pot by a new and improved method such that on the interior of the fire pot pairs of outstanding ribs turned toward each other and separated at their adjacent edges may be made, these ribs in the process of casting; being chilled so that in actual service, in which they are subjected to very high temperatures, they are very durable and do not burn out as quickly as when cast in accordance with other methods. The method of producing the fire pot is illustrated as far as possible in the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of a fire pot cast in accordance with my method, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower part or drag of the mold with chills in place thereon such as are used in the process of casting the fire pot shown in Fig. 1.
The fire pot includes a ring 1, Which may be of any desired depth, on the inner sides of which at spaced intervals appear pairs of inwardly extending and curved ribs 2. These ribs are curved toward each other but do not meet being separated at adjacent edges by slots 3 as shown.
In the casting of this fire pot a circular mold l, preferably of sand, is made in the periphery of which a plurality of concaved depressions 5 are formed. Chills 6 are located in these depressions each having a rearwardly extending tongue 7 to enter a suitable groove at the rear side of the depression 5, thereby locating the chill in proper Specification of Letters Patent.

position with respect to the mold. When this mold. is covered by a suitable copeand molten iron is poured therein the iron flows around the chills to make the curved rib 2 in the spaces left between. the chills and the depressions 5 in the lower part of the mold. The ring- 1 is of ordinary cast iron but the ribs 2 are chilled by reason of the contact of the molten metal against the chills 6.
In actual service in furnaces T have found that a fire pot cast in accordance with the above described method is of greater durability than one in which ordinary cores are used in place of the chills. The chilled metal is much more capable of withstanding the heat to which furnace fire pots are subjected and especially the direct contact of the burning fuel thereagainst much more satisfactory than ordinary cast iron. The method of casting which T have described produces a furnace fire pot having the chilled interior ribs and by this method fire pots may be very readily produced, in fact, more readily than with cores.
1 claim 1. The method of casting a furnace fire pot which consists in forming a drag with a plurality of depressions therein, in its outer face, thenprcviding a plurality of chills, each formed of a body and tongue, placing the tongue of a chill in each depression to locate the chill properly with respect to the drag, then placing a cope thereover spaced at its inner sides from the outer sides of the chills and the drag, and then pouring molten iron into the spaces between the drag and cope and around the bodies of the chills, substantially as described.
2. The method of casting a furnace fire not which consists in forming a drag with a plurality of depressions on its outer face, locating chills therein, each having a body and a rearwardly extending tongue, placing a cope thereover and pouring molten iron into the spaces between the cope and drag, and chills and drag thereby forming a cast iron ring having pairs of chilled ribs on the inner side thereof, substantially as described,
3. The method of casting a furnace fire pot which consists in forming a drag with a plurality of concave depressions on its face, each depression being formed with a lengthwise recess, locating chills in said depressions, each chill having a tongue seating in a recess and a body spaced from the sides of a depression, placing a cope thereoveiand pouring molten metal into the spaces between the drag and cope and between the chills and sides of said depressions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afl'ix my signature.
