To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Y. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas engines, especially to gas engines of the stationary horizontal type, and more particularly to the arrangement of the water reservoir which supplies water to the water jacket of such engines for cooling purposes.
Heretofore in this particular type of en gine it was customary to locate the reservoir directly above the cylinder.
An object of the present invention is to so locate the water reservoir that it will tend to strengthen that part of the structure upon which the greatest strain is brought, which is that part located between the bearings for the crank shaft and the cylinder.
A further object of the invention is to so arrange the reservoir that it will tend to balance the parts and bring the greatest weight or center of gravity closer to the crank shaft and more directly over the base, permitting such a balance of the entire engine that greater speed can more easily be obtained with a minimum of vibration and material reduction in weight.
A further object is to provide a structure which will give more symmetrical lines to the engine.
A further object of the invention is to simplify the construction of and make more effective the operation of devices of this character.

In said drawings, 1 indicates the base upon which is mounted the crank case 2, having bearings for the crank shaft 3, carrying the fly wheels 4 on the exterior of the case: and connected in the usual way with the piston rod 5 of the piston 6. The cylinder 7 is in the present case cast integrally with the crank case and provided with the usual form of integral water jacket 8.
As before stated, in former structures it is usual to locate the reservoir for the cooling Water directly above the cylinder with a suitable communication with the water jacket. In the present case the reservoir, the outlines of which are represented by 9, 10 and 11 is located above but at one end of the cylinder in a direction toward the crank shaft, part of the reservoir being in fact directly over the crank shaft. This brings the reservoir more near the center of gravity of the engine with the consequent advantages already stated. The reservoir is preferably formed integral with the crank case and the forward end communicates directly with water jacket of the engine, and is formed integral therewith.
Having thus described my invention. 1 claim I 1. In an internal combustion engine, a suitable base, a crank shaft mounted in bearings supported by said base, a horizontally-arranged cylinder having its piston connected with said crank shaft, a water jacket for said cylinder, and an overhead water reservoir communicating with said water jacket and being so located with respectto the cylinder and its jacket as to bring the center of gravity toward the crankshaft.
2. In an internal combustion engine, a suitable base, a crank case mounted on said base, a crank shaft mounted in bearings in said crank case, a horizontally-arranged cylinder supported on said base having its piston connected with said crank shaft, a water jacket for said cylinder, and a water reservoir communicating with said water jacket and located substantially in its entirety above and supported by the crankcase.
3. In an internal combustion engine, a suitable base, crank case supported on said base, a crank shaft having bearings in saidcrank case, a horizontally-arranged cylinder supported in said base, a water jacket for said cylinde and a water reservoir communicating with said Water jacket and formed integrally with said crank case, and located adjacent and above the crank shaft and out of vertical alinement with said cylinder.
