nvmdoz ern-rse Specification of Letters Patent.
,ll-Patented Feb., ilf..
Application led Dctober 18, 191'?. Serial No. 197,320.
To @ZZ whom it' may concern.'
Be it lniown that l, Louis J. Brunn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing; at Algiers, in the parish of Orleans andState of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window/Sash Holders and Latches, of which the followmg is a specication.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as builders hardware, and more particularly relates to a Window sash holder and latch.'
its the primary aim and object the present invention contemplatesvthe provision oi a device of the above mentioned character designed for application on the stile of a Window casing and on the lower sash for either removably locking the Window sash ina.
closed position or else removably locking the sash in various positions of adjustment.
More particularly the present invention embraces the provision oit a device ont' the. above mentioned character wherein a pair et relatively movable manually operable sec tions are attached to the window sash and are capable of being readily extended to assume a locked position and subsequently held in such position to prevent relative movement of the sash with respect to the casing.
lt is a more specific object of this inven tion to provide a Window' sash holder or latch wherein the construction thereof is noveland permits of the convenient manual operation thereof While the parts are s o arranged that whenl placed vin an extended or locked: position the sash cannot be moved in any direction until the .releasing means is actua-ted.
lt is an additional object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliableand efficient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the\ features of construction, the combination of elements and the arrangement ot' parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims. i. lEhe invention is clearly set forth in the accompanying drawings, in Whichz Figure l is a front elevation of the deviceV applied and arranged 1n an open position;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same sash in locked position; A
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal detail of the device; l
Fig. 4 is a perspective detail. v
Similar characters of reference are employed in all the above described views, to indicate ,corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a Window casing l in which is slidably mounted a lower ryish 2 While secured to the stile 3 ot the casing and the 2 is the improved holding4 and latchingf de ice, indicated in its entirety by the numeral ei.
With a view toward providing the iin proved holding and latchingr device a rack bar 5 is employed and is formed on its outer face with a series ot teeth while the respece tive ends arcueduced and secured to the inner surface ot one ot the stilesA near the sill through the instrumentality of `suitable fasteners 7.
Coperating with the teeth of the rack bar is the improved holding` or latching member 8. This member consists oi an inner section 9 and an outer section l0. The inner section is pivoted :for 4vertical swinging movement to the outer surface of the lower portion of the sash 2 through the instmnnentalityA of suitable fasteners ll While the adjacent ends of the sections 9 and l0 are shaped to form a rule joint 12 and are pivotally supported with respect to each other through the instrumentality of the shank l3nt' a knob 14. The inner end oi the shank of course is slightly flattened as at 15 so as to prevent accidental disengagement of the sections. A head 16 is formed on the outer end of the outer section 10 While the outer face of the bled iii C Il ' fi is formed or prov wir ootoli i? esigiied for engagement Wi @i any one of the teeth o of the rook T er i3. ,iii operably coil- :oeetiiig the oi: section l to the susii am te et' eoier "i3 is eirootreeol of the sosll, 2
