Description

JAMES HANNAN.
Improvement in Dip Pipe in Hydraulic Main for Gas Works.
No. 125,733, mma April16,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JAMES HANNAN, OF GALLIPOLIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ROBERT T.
COVERDALE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIP-PIPES IN HYDRAULIC MAINS FOR GAS WORKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,733, dated April 16, 1872.
I, J AMES HANNAN, of Gallipolis, Gallia county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful device for independently regulating the flow of gas from each dip in hydraulic mains for gas-works, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of Invention.
' I the object of my invention being to render each dip-pipe independent of the others in the same main, and provide a very simple device for this purpose.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing. Figure 1 is a vertical section of a sufficient portion of gas apparatus to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section.
General Description.
A represent a dip-pipe, connected through pipes B and O with the gas-generator, and'endiug in the customary hydraulic main D. By the introduction of the cup E, secured to the top of the dip-pipe in the manner shown, an
annular chamber is provided for the occupancy of water for a seal An inverted cup, F, operates within this annular seal, and supports a rod, G, which passes entirely through the dip-pipe, and terminates in a circular cup, H, adapted to surround the lower end of the dippipe, as shown in Fig. 1.
The cup F, rod G, and cup H, are operated by lover I, or other suitable means, in such a way as to close the end of the dip-pipe by hydraulic sealing, asshown in Fig. 2, (when it is necessary to recharge or repair the retortto which it is connected,) or to open the end of the dip-pipe entirely, as shown in Fig. 2, to
permit the free escape of gas, and avoid back pressure upon the generating apparatus.
I do not claim, broadly, an hydraulic seal at the upper end of a dip-pipe; nor a movable water-cup, in which the lower end of the dippipe may be immersed; but' What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The fixed or stationary dip-pipe A, encircled at its upper end by the open water-cup E, in combination with the movable and connected cups F and. H, arranged and operating substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto ,set my hand.
JAMES HANNAN.
