ACETYLENE-GAS GENERATOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VV'ALTER R. ARNDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Elk and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to generators for acetylene gas, used for illumination and other purposes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination ofthe parts hereinafter fully described and claimed whereby the carbid is supplied and is converted into gas automatically and in proportion to the amount of gas required;
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through an acetylene gas generator constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a front View of the carbid supply valve. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the carbid supply valve when open.
A water seal tank 2 is provided, and 3 is a gas bell which slides vertically 'in the water seal tank. The gas bell has an air outlet valve a at its top, and 5 are guides secured to the tank 2 and engaging with guide wheels 6 carried by the gas bell. A water chamber 7 is arranged inside the water seal tank, so that the water seal tank is an annular vessel in which the main portion of the gas bell is movable.
A carbid holder 8 is provided and has a conical bottom 9 terminating with an outlet 10. The-carbid holder is supported in the upper partof thewater chamber 7 in any approved way, and lugs 11 may be secured to the carbid holder to support it by resting on the top edge of the chamber 7.
A gas outlet pipe 14L is arranged vertlcally in the chamber 7, and is preferably secured against the side wall of the chamber. The lower part of the pipe 14 is extended laterally through the water. seal tank, below the bottom edge of the gas bell, and is provided with an outlet valve 15 of any approved construction. The top of the gas outlet pipe 14 is preferably provided with a downwardly curved inlet portion 16, and a gas strainer 17 of approved construction is connected to it, if desired.

A cylindrical valve 20 is provided and has small trunnions 21 at its ends which are journaled in the bearing brackets 18 so that the cylindrical: valve can be oscillatedwith very little frictional resistance. The valve 20 is preferably formed of thin sheet metal and is hollow, and it has a tubular outlet pipe 22 extending laterally through it. This pipe 22 is preferably tapered, and its smaller end is adapted to register with the carbid outlet 10 which is of the same diameter. The outlet 10 is normally closed by the cylindrical valve, and the bottom edge of the carbid holder around the outlet 10 is shaped and curved to correspond with the curvature of the cylindricalvalve. The brackets l8 depend below the level of the outlet 10,and the valve 20 is supported by them in the open gas space under the outlet. The parts are arranged so that they are not pressed together and are not in any such close relation as to cause any frictional resistance to to the arm 26 by a pin 28. its upper end is arranged. above the level of As the gas in the gas bell is used up, the gas bell descends by gravity, and when most of the gas has been let out, the top of the gas bell depresses the rod, and thereby turns the cylindrical valve in its bearing brackets, and permits a supply of carbid to descend from the carbid holder through the crosspipe '22 into the water chamber 7. When this carbid is converted into gas the gas bell is raised by the gas, and the carbid supply valve is closed automatically by the weighted yoke, which also raises the tappet rod. The weight is arranged at the middle part of the yoke so that each trunnion is subjected to the same twisting strain and so that the hollow sheet metal valve is moved with the least possible friction to close the outlet.
What I claim is:
1. In an acetylene gas generator, the combination, with a water chamber, and a water seal tank encircling it; of a carbid holder supported over the water chamber and provided with an outlet opening, bearings secured to the carbid holder and depending below the said outlet opening, a hollow cylindrical valve provided with trunnions which are journaled in the said bearings, said valve being arranged in the space below the carbid holder and provided with a crosspipe extending between the opposite sides of its periphery and adapted to register with the said inlet opening, a tappet rod operatively connected with the said valve, a weight normally holding the said valve closed, and a gas hell working in the water seal tank and depressing the tappet rod when lowered.
2. In an acetylene gas generator, the com-1 bination, with a water chamber, and a water seal tank encircling it, of a carbid holder supported over the water chamber and provided with an outlet opening, bearings secured to the carbid holder and depending below the said outlet opening, a hollow eylindrical valve provided with trunnions which are journaled in the said bearings, said valve being arranged in the space below the carbid holder and provided with a crosspipe extending between the opposite sides of its periphery and adapted to register with the said outlet opening, a yoke secured to the trunnions and provided with a weightat its middle part, an arm secured to the yoke and projecting on the opposite side of the axis of the valve from the said weight, a conduit pipe extending vertically through the carbid holder, a tappet rod arranged in the conduit pipe and pivoted to the said arm, and a gas bell working in the water seal tank and depressing the tappet rod when lowered.
