ACETYLENE-GAS GENERATOR.

T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. GELLEN- BECK, of Shakopee, Scott county, Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Generators, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention'relates to improvements in acetylene-gas generators; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, shows a vertical crosssection of my improved apparatus.
In the drawing, A represents the holder, having the water-receptacle 2, the bell 3 working in said receptacle and guided in its vertical movement, as actuated by the inclosed gas, by means of the rod 4, working in eyes pr guides 5 upon the outer wall of the recepac e 2.
6 is a water-inlet pipe by means of which the supply of water may be maintained in the gas-holder.
7 is the gas-outlet pipe, provided with suitable stop-cock 8 and drainage-cock 9.
10 is the gas-inlet pipe,having, preferably, a flaring mouth or bell 11, normally standing beneath'the surface of the water 12-, so as to wash the gas as it enters the gas-holder.
13 is a movable Valve or plug in the top of the bell, to permit the escape of air when the bell is set in place.
B is the generator, made up of the water receptacle 14 and the bell 15, standing in and sealed by the water thereof. This bell is preferably set so as not to move in use by means of spring-catches 16, which support the bellin its normal position, but which can be sprung back out of engagement with the bell, so as to descend when it is desired to expel all the inclosed gas.
17 is a 'movablevalve or plug for permitting the escape of air when the bell is set in place. i
18 is the water-inlet pipe, by means of which the water-receptacle 14 can be charged with the water 20.
Arranged in the generator is the carbidbasket 21, having an open top and open-work 5o sides and bottom. The basket is provided with a vertical tubular opening 22 therethrough surrounding the gas-outlet pipe 23, which is connected with the pipe 10 in the gas-holder and is provided with a suitable drainage-cock 24. The top of the pipe 23 stands normally open to permit the gas to pass from the generator to the gas-holder, but may be closed by the valve 25, actuated by the valve-stem 26 and handle 27. The valve is closed whenever it is desired to recharge the generator. The closed top pipe 28, extending through the center of the basket and fixed thereto, is adapted to receive the stand-pipe 29, fixed to the bottom of the waterreceptacle, through which the rod 30 extends to the top of the pipe 28. This rod is pivotally connected to and supported upon the lever 31, which is pivoted on'a double hinge 32to the bottom of the generator, its power-arm 33 carrying a weight 34. The other end of the lever is pivotally connected to the rod 35, having adjustable stops 36 and 37, between which stands the rod 38, carried by the bell of the gas-holder. This rod 38 slides freely upon the rod .35 between the stops and serves to actuate the rod when it strikes either of the stops, so as to operate the lever 31-, and thereby either raise or lower the carbid-basket to partially submerge or lift it above the water in the generator, so as to set the generator in action or stop the generating of gas automatically as the bell 3 rises and falls. The debris can be removed from the generator through the drainage-valve 39.
40 is a dome upon the top of the bell 15, which serves to receive the top of the pipe 28 when the bell is thrust downward, so as to entirely submerge the carbid-basket to force all of the inclosed gas out through the pipe 33.
To set the apparatus in operation, the gas holder and generator are both supplied with water to the levels indicated in the drawing. The valve 13 in the bell 3 is then opened to allow the escape of the inclosed air and permit the bell to descend to the bottom, when the valve is closed. The bell 15 is then removed from the generator, and the basket is supplied with carbid. The bell being then returned to place and the valve 17 opened, the inclosed air is permitted to escape, and
the bell is pushed downward, so as to force all of the included air out, and when the gas has generated from the carbid it can be lifted into place and secured byits spring-catches. The gas then flows from the generator through the pipes 23 and into the gas-holder, the bell 3 being gradually lifted until the rod 38 strikes the stop 36, thereby lifting the rod 35 and operating the lever 31, so as to gradually lift the carbid-basket out of the surrounding water, thus checking the generating of gas, the outflow of gas from the gas-holder being controlled by its stop-cock 8.
When it is desired to recharge the generator, the spring-catches 16 are disengaged from the bell and the bell pressed down until the gas is entirely expelled from the generator, when the valve is closed. The bell is then lifted out of the generator and the basket recharged, the bell being restored in place in the manner above described. The valve 25 then being opened, the operation is proceeded with.
I claim 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the gas-holder, of the generator consisting of the water-receptacle, the bell arranged therein and sealed by its contained water, the carbid-basket arranged within said bell, and the water seal consisting of a pipe opening through the bottom of the water-receptacle of the generator and telescoping into said carbid basket, and the means operated by the bell of the gas-holder for raising and lowering said basket.
2. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination with the gas-holder, of the generator consisting of a water-receptacle, the carbid basket arranged therein, the pipe opening through the bottom of the receptacle and telescoping into the carbid-basket to form a water seal, the rod extending through said waterseal pipes, and the means actuated from the bell of the gas-holder for raising and lowering said rod to carry the carbid-basket into or out of the water.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the gas-generator, comprising in combination the water receptacle, the bell adjustable therein and sealed by its contained water, the means for securing the bell in normal position, the carbid-basket arranged within said bell, the stand-pipe arranged in said holder to permit the outflow of gas and projecting into and through a vertical opening in said basket, the valve for closing the top of said stand-pipe, the centrally-arranged stand-pipe in said generator, opening through the bottom of the water-receptacle, and telescoping into the closed pipe in said basket, the rod extending through said stand-pipe and to the top of said closed pipe, the lever for reciprocating said rod, and the operating connections between said lever and the bell of the gas-holder, whereby the carbid-basket is carried into or out of the water automatically by the rise and fall of the bell of the gas-holder.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the gas-holder A having a hell 3, and the generator B having the bell 15, of the spring-catches for supporting the bell 15 in normal position, the carbid-basket arranged therein, the stand-pipe 23 arranged in said generator and provided with a valve 25, the stand-pipe 29 working in an opening in the basket, the rod extending through said pipe 29 and to the basket, the lever 31 connected to said rod and serving to actuate the same to raise and lower the basket, and the opera-ting connection between said lever and the bell 3, whereby the rise and fall of the bell 3 serves to automatically raise and lower the basket.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the gas-holder, of the gas-generator, comprising in combination the Water-receptacle, the bell adjustable therein and scaled by its contained water, the earbid basket arranged within said bell, the stand-pipe in said generator opening through the bottom of the water-receptacle and telescoping into a closed pipe in said basket, the rod extending through said stand-pipe and to the top of said closed pipe, the lever for reriprocating said rod, and the operating connections between said lever and the bell of the gasholder, whereby the carbid-basket is carried into or out of the water automatically by the rise and fall of the bell of the gasholder.
