CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 191.8..
Application led October =11, 1915. Serial No. 55,199.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DARWIN S. BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said draw ings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a nearly front face view of a corset constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a. sectional view on a larger scale showing my improved supporting pad connected with a corset.
Fig. 3 a detail view showing the formation of slots in the lower front of the corset.
Fig. 4 a face view of the abdominal pad, detached.
Fig. 5 a broken perspective view illustrating the shape of the pad at the back of the belt.
This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, and particularly to corsets of the supporter type.
The object of this invention is to adapt a corset with particular reference to use in the case of strain ofthe sacro iliac joint; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
ln carrying out my invention I have shown it in connection with a front-lace corset, and preferably that style of corset is used, although it is obvious that various other styles of corsets may be employed. As herein shown, the corset 2 is provided with front lacings 3 and the usual clasp fastenings 4. On each side of the lower front portion of the corset are a series of openings 5. These, as shown, are preferably formed by attaching transverse strips 6 of webbing at intervals across a long slot 15 and securing them in place by binders 7. 0n the inner face of the back are secured loops 8 through which the supporting belt 9 extends. rlhis belt is provided at opposite ends with straps 10 and 11 which respectively project through the openings 5 so as to be conveniently engaged with buckles 12 secured to an abdominal pad 13 which, when the straps are secured, rests on the outside of'the corset over the abdomen. This belt 8 1s provided in its center with a pad 14. Preferably and as shown, this pad is wedgeshaped and is located so as to rest over the sacro iliac joint. The securing straps can be passed through any of the openings in the lower front portion of the corset according to the direction of the strain to be imposed upon the belt.
It will be noted that the number of openlngs formed in the sides of the corset is greater in. number than the number of straps connected with the belt. This permits the belt to be adjusted so as to more closely it the figure to which the garmentis applied. If the number of openings corresponded in number to the number 0f straps, this adjustment could not be made because if the belt were raised, the upper strap would have no opening for it; or, if the belt were lowered, the lower strap would have no opening for it.
A belt provided with my improved pad and properly adjusted in connection with a corset, tends to draw the two sides of the body firmly together, and pressing gently against a weakened joint in the back, gives the requisite amount of pressure to keep the sacrum in place, and at the same time provide the desired support for the abdomen.
I claim 1. The combination with a corset, of a belt provided at its ends with securing straps and at the center with a back pad, the lower center of each side of the corset formed with a series of openings more in number than the number of securing straps on the belt, said securing straps adapted to extend through the openings in the sides of the corset, an abdominal pad, and means for securing the straps to the said abdominal pad.
Copies' of this patent may Be olitained for five cents each, by address-ing passed through any of said openings, and series of openingsis forine. On each side of ymeans for attaching the ends of the straps. VVthe center,. a belt provided at its ends with 3. The combination With a corset having straps adapted topass through any of saidrn. a,` slot on each side of the lower center, a openings, and means for attaching theiends' bindin strip on each side of said Slt, a seof thesaid straps. ries o n straps crossing said slots and secured to opposite edgesthereof, whereby a fDAI'tWIYNS.4 BERGER.
