Wain eases MARTIN REICI-IMANN, OF BEUTHEN', GERMANY.
PROCESS FOR UTILIZING WASTE LEATHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed July 17, 1917. Serial No. 181,184.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN REICHMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Beuthen, Upper Silesia, Prussia, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Process for Utilizing Waste Leather, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In making leather wares, the composite parts of the article to be made are usually cut from the whole sheet of leather, leaving a considerable amount of waste material.
The object of the present invention is to utilize the waste leather by forming composite fiat strips of the same which may be interwoven and the resultant strips utilized to form various articles of use.
According to the invention the waste leather is cut into strips of equal or substantially equal size, which are threaded on to two or more wires or cords, so as to form bands composed of strips of leather standing on edge. These bands are then interwoven with each other to form continuous leather surfaces, of any desired size or shape. In order to render the present specification easily intelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawing showing a plan view of a part of a fabric made according to the present invention. 7
Figure 1 is a plan view of the fabric made according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a View of a band which consti- ,tutes both the warp and weft of the fabric.
Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the leather strips out and prepared for threading on the wires.
castes of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
According to the invention, the waste leather is first reduced to a number of small pieces or plates of uniform size such as indicated at c and these plates or disks are threaded on to suitable cords or wires (Z d to form the strips a and b of any desired length, as will be readily understood.
These strips, the surfaces of which are fiat 0r comparatively flat, are then interwoven with each other to form entire surfaces, which may be utilized for any desired purpose, such as for making workmens aprons, jackets, gloves or the like.
Articles made in this manner are very durable and necessarily comparatively cheap, while great saving in leather is effected.
I claim as my invention 1. A process for utilizing waste leather which consists in reducing the same to pieces of substantially equal size and shape, threading them on wires or the like to form substantially flat bands and interweaving the said bands one with the other.
2. A leather fabric composed of a series of leather disks or strips of substantially uniform size and shape, bands upon which the same are threaded to form strips, the said strips being interwoven with each other.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN REICHMANN.
