Description
T. F. SOMERS.
GORSEL.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 5,1917.
Patented Feb.19,1918.
THOMAS F. SOMERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CGRSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1918.
Application filed November 5, 191?. Serial No. 200,420.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, THOMAS F. SoMnRs,
a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York city, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corsets and has for its object to provide an improved means for adjusting the corset to fit the figure without removing it, and without time consuming lacing and unlacing.
The invention contemplates the use, with the usual two part corset, of a belt strap passing around each part of the corset at the waist line and connected to the other part in the rear by a plurality of connecting traps which are guided in a novel manner, the belt straps being adapted to be tightened to cause the connecting straps to draw the adjacent rear edges of the parts together until the corset fits close to the figure, and then conveniently to be tied or buckled in front.
The novel feature of the invention will be fully disclosed in the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the entire corset spread out flat;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the corset as it appears when being worn; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a small portion of the back.
My improved adjusting means may be used with corsets of different styles and is not limited to use with the particular kind of corset shown in the drawings, in which only a small portion extends above the waist line, provided that the corset is in sections or has an expansion slit therein to which the invention may be applied.
The sections 10 and 11 of the corset shown are similar in shape and are provided with the usual fastening devices 12 for securing the front edges 13, let together. The rear edges are held together by my improved adjusting means which comprises the belt straps 15, disposed along the waist line of the garment and held in place by the tape guides 16, and the connecting straps or tapes 17 which are each secured at one end to the belt strap 15 of one of the parts and at the other end to the edge of the other section of the corset.
Each of the sections is provided with a series of alined slots 18 which serve as guides for the connecting tapes securcd to the other section. These guides are important, as they prevent the sections of the cor set from becoming separated when the corset is not in use, and aiso have the more important function of directing the connecting tapes so that they exert a pull on the edge of one section which tends to draw it directly toward the other section instead of allowing it to exert a diagonal pull toward the belt strap, as would be the case if the guides were not present. The slots in each part or section are of course directly opposite the points at which the connecting straps passing therethrough are fastened to the other part.
In putting on the corset the belt straps are loose, so that the rear edges may separate while the front edges are fastened to gether. The free ends of the belt straps being then in front of the body, may be grasped by the hands and pulled forward to tighten the connecting straps and draw the rear edges together. When the corset its the body tigatly the ends of the belt straps are tied together in front.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent lo 1. In a corset, the combination with two similar parts or sections, adapted to be tened together at their opposite edges, of positive fastening devices for the front edges of the parts, and adjustable means connecting the rear edges thereof so as to permit the relative adjustment of the parts to conform to different figures, said adjustable means comprising a belt strap disposed along the waist line of each part, a plurality of connecting straps each secured at one end to the back edge of one part and having its other end secured to the belt strap of the opposite part, and a guide on each of said parts for each individual connecting strap secured to the other part, said belt straps being adapted to be tightened to draw the rear edges of the parts together and to be fastened together in front of the corset, each connecting strap being directed by its corresponding guide to exert a pull on one section which tends to draw it directly toward the other section.
2. In a corset, the combination with two similar parts or sections adapted to be fastened together at their font and rear edges,
each of said parts having a series of alined slots adjacent and parallel to its rear edge, of positive fastening devices for the front edges of the parts and adjustable means connecting the rear edges thereof so as to permit the relative adjustment of the parts to conform to different figures, said adjustable means comprising a plurality of connecting straps each secured at one end to one part or section adjacent its rear edge and extending through one of the slots of the other part and guided thereby, and a belt strap arranged along the waist line of each part and connected to the connecting straps secured to the other part, said belt straps being adapted to be tightened to draw the rear edges of the parts together and to be fastened together in front of the corset, each connecting strap being directed by its corresponding guide to exert a pull on one section which tends to draw it directly toward the other section;
In'testimony whereof I affix my signature.
THOMAS 'F. SOMERS.
