Application led September 15, 1916. eriallo. 120,315.
L256A58. Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom z't may concern.'
PETER Fri-Anselmo, a citizen of the United States. residing at Manistee, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented certain useful Improvements in Shipping-Crates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in shipping crates. oneobject of the invention being the provision of a crate consisting o an outer and inner crate, which carries resilient supporting members for the inner crate, so that perishable goods may be supported without being damaged in transit, while a novel form of lidsupporting and locking` means for the outer crate is rovided. Another object of the invention 1s the provision' of a shipping crate of this character wherein the inner crate is con- Be it known that I,

sure thorough ventilation so that the contents of the carrier for the goods will be rendered cool and dry thereby preventing molding and rotting of such goods within the carrier.-
A further objectof this invention is the provision of a shipping crate which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, and thoroughly eiiicient and practical in use.
l In the accompanying drawings Iigure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view an Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the outer casing of the present crate which is of open structure and is provided with the four corner posts 6 and with the bottom slats 7. A
Attached to the bottom slats upon the interior of the casing by means of staples or other fastening devices 8 are the terminals 9 of the resilient supporting member 10,`
there being two of thesemembers and each being made from a single strand of wire.
The inner crate or goods carrying member i's adapted to rest upon these springs or resilient supports which tend to hold the same upwardly and in close contact with the the outer crate of Y underside of the removable top or cover 11 of the present shipping crate. The resilient supporting members 10 each is formed with a shoulder on each side which serves to hold theinner crate in place as will be apparent.
In order that the cover supported andbe readily released or secured in place, without the use of nails or screws, there is attached to each one of the posts the staples 12 which receive the respective hooked terminals 13 of the two U-shaped f bails 14 and 15.
The bail14 is adapted to surround one end of the top or cover and be hingedly vconnected thereto by means of the staples 16, while the bail 15 is adapted, when the cover is in sealing position, to fitv upon the opposite end of the cover, and thus resiliently hold the cover closed and the inner crate cushioned upon its spring support,
Mounted in one end of the outer crate is the hook shank 17 having the eye which is loosely or pivotally connected upon supporting terminal 18 the hook shank 17 is provided with the eye 19 which is adapted to coperate with the staple 20 carried by the cover to receive a padlock, so that the cover may be securely held in position` during shipment.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that with a crate equipped with the present attachments, the cover may be readil;1 released and secured without the employment of nails or other fastening devices. At the corners of the crates are reinforcing` plates or straps 21. it being understood of course that the body of the outer crate can be changed or altered in the construction thereof as the occasion may require and as comes properly within the scope of the claim hereunto appended without departing from the spirit yof the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
- The resilient supports for the inner crate, as well as the inner crate, may be dispensed with, as the outer casing may be used as a shipping crate alone.
What I claimA as new is In a device of the character described in combination an outer and an inner crate, a pair of similarly shaped wf: devices may be' properly each being formed from a sin le length of horizontally and transversely disposed reresilient wire bent into' a su stantlal U- silient supporting member upon which the shape and having right angular terminals inner crate is mounted in spaced relation 10 secured direct] upon the bottom of the from the bottom of the outer crate.
5 outer crate, andl having upwardly inclinin In testimony whereof I uix my Signature.
` side portions bent back downwardly an terminating in a U-shaped substantially PETER FLANSBURG.
