Description

.A. VAN eon-2E. SHADE ROLLER. APPLICATION FILED. OCT- 1, i915.
Patented Febf 5, 1918. L
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON VAN GOFRE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES J. GREENE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SHADE-ROLLER. r
Application filed October 7, 1915.
To all to 700m it may concern.
Be it known that l, An'rou VAN Gornn, a citizen of Holland, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of. Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Rollers, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to shade rollers and more particularly to an awning of the roll type, the principal object of the invention being to provide an a \\-'11i11g of this character with yielding latch n'iechanisn'i, against the tension of which the awning may be lowered and which is adapted for retaining the awning in set position.
In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is an enlarged perspective view of the latch mechanism.
Fig. II is a longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. III is an end view of the inner latch, the-outer drum being removed.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
2 designates an awning roller containing a spring-5 which is arranged to urge the roller in a direction to rewind the curtain (not shown), carried thereby, the
spring 5 and roller bearing 6 being of any ordinary construction and for that reason not illustrated nor described in detail.
Fixed to a frame 7 at the end of .the awning opposite the bearing 6 is a bracket 8, having spaced collars 99' and mounted in said collars is a hollow rod 10, and a connected extension 10 that is fixed against rotation by set screws 11-11 which project through the collars into engagement with the rod, the outer end of the rod being open and the inner end of the extension being also open and enlarged to form a bar rel 12.
Rotatably mounted on the barrel 12 are drums 15l6, each of which comprises a hub member 17*17, a bowed rim 18 18" Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 5, 1-918.
Serial No. 54,675.
and inturned rails 19-19', the rails being longer than the inner members of the hubs, so that their inner edges meet and space the drums, for the purpose presently described.
The rail 19 of the inner drum 15 has stamped out cars 21 that lie along and are fixed to the end of the roll 2, preferably by screws 22 and fixed to the outer face of said inner drum, preferably by screws 24 are springs 25, having heads 26 that extend beyond the body portions of the springs and project into apertures 27 in the web 28 ot the outer drum 16, both ends of the springs being anchored to the drum 15, so that the springs are held, but may yield to permitmovement of the roll drum 15 relative to the drum 16.
The outer face of the bow 18 of drum 16 has shoulders 30 therein facing in the direction of the unwinding travel of the awning, and has inclined faces leading from the shoulders to the plane of the bow, and projected through the barrel 12 is a pin 31,
the ends of which extend past the how 18 of the drum 16 and are adapted to bear thereagainst and to seat against the shoulders 30; the inclination of the shoulders being such that when the ends of the pin 31 are seated thereagainst, under normal pressure the roller is substantially held against unwinding and will remain at any set position, but when additional weight is applied to or removed from the curtain weight 4 to unwind or wind the curtain, the pin will ride over the shouldered periphery of the drum against the tension of the p ng The drums l5 and 16 are spaced at their hubs by a collar 33 and fixed to the barrel 12 at the inside of the drum 15 is a sleeve 34 which projects beyond the end of the barrel and forms a cup 35 for the outer end of an expansion spring 36, the inner end of which projects into a socket 37 in the end of the awning roll 2 and carries a cap 38.
Extending through the hollow rod members 1()10, and through an aperture in the pin 31 is a tension rod 40, having a collar 41 thereon, adapted for bearing against the pin 31; the inner end of the rod being threaded into the base of the cap 38 and the outer end of which carries a handle 42, so that when the handle is turned in one direction it draws the cap 38 against the end of the expa sit'n spring to stiflen the spring and thereby increase the pressure of the arms 31 against the drum 16, and when moved in the other direction decreases the pressure to permit a freer action of the drums.
Assuming that the parts are constructed and assembled as described and that the awning is up, should it be desired to lower the awning, the operator draws on the end of the curtain to unwind the same from the roll 2, the roll turning during the unwinding and carrying the drums 15 and 16 around with it and tensioning the spring 5, the shouldered parts of the drum 16 yielding against the tension of the spring 36 to permit the unwinding action, although they ordinarily serve to hold the awning raised against the tension of the weight 4.
When is desired to rewind the awning, its free edge is lifted to relieve the weight, and the spring 5, (being strong enough to overcome the friction of the springs 25) rewinds the awning, the springs 25 yielding to permit the heads 26 to press out of the apertures 27 in the web of the outer drum 16, and the spring 35 holding the pin 31 against the arm of the outer drum to retain the drum 16 stationary while the inner drum 15 and the curtain roll revolve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with an awning roller having means for revolving the same in a winding direction when released, of .a latch mechanism comprising a rigidly mounted axle member, a drum revolubly mounted thereon and secured to said roller, a second drum revolubly mounted on said axle and having a shouldered periphery, means on, said first drum for engaging the second drum to revolve the latter when the former is turned in 'anunwinding direction, a pin projected through said axle and adapted to engage the shouldered periphery of the second drum and yieldable means for holding said pin against said shouldered periphery.
2. The combination with an awnin roller having. at one end a revoluble mounting and a spring for revolving said roller in a winding direction when released, and having a socket in its opposite end, of latch mechanism comprising a rigidly mounted axle member, a drum revolubly mounted on said axle and secured to said roller, a second drum revolubly mounted on said axle and having an apertured face and shouldered periphery, yieldable members secured to said first drum and adapted for projection into the apertures of said second drum to revolve the latter with the former when going in an unwinding direction, a pin projected through said axle and adapted to engage the shouldered periphery of the second drum, and yieldable means for holding said pin against said shouldered periphery.
3. The combination with an awning roller having at one end a revoluble mounting and a spring for revolving said roller in a winding direction when released and having a socket in its opposite end, of latch mechanism comprising a rigidly mounted hollow axle member having an enlargement at its inner end, a drum revolubly mounted on said enlargement and secured to said roller and having an outturned flange at its periphery, a second drum revolubly mounted on said axle and having an outstanding shouldered rim and an inturned rim to engage the outturned rim of said first drum, a pin projected through saidaxle, transversely therewith and adapted for seating against said shouldered periphery, atensioning rod projecting through said hollow axle and extending into said roller socket, a shoulder on said tension rod adapted to engage said transverse pin, a cap threaded on the inner end of said tension rod, and a spring wound about said rod to bear against the said cap and against the inner end of said axle to tension said pin against said shouldered periphery, and a thumb nut on the outer end of said rod to tension said spring.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
ANTON VAN GOFRE.
