V This invention relates to an adjusting de vice for regulating the tension in a roller upon which a screen is wound.
- More specifically the invention pertains one of a series-ofinventions appertaining tea 3 p v ablyfapplied to sash 10."
combination screen and glass window construction, the other inventions having been made the 'basis lof other' applications for patent. J f e is 4 a 7 An important object of the invention is to provide an improved-construction whereby the screen-roller-spring may be very quickly adjusted tov anyten's'iondesired, without removing the roller from its-housing. Sa1d improvement including a circular dished ratchet, a spring .dog engageable with the teeth thereof, and means manually operative through the medium of said ratchet and'dog i to tensionsaid spring.
"26 A further object of the invention is in'the v provision "of simplified means whereby the screen may be held snugly rolled on the roller 7 thus maintaining the proper adjusted tene sion of the-spring when it is desired to remove the roller for repairsor'for other reasons. Still furtherobjects, advantages and features of the invention may also hereinafter appear.
Referring to the; accompanying drawing '30 which illustrates-what is at present deemed I to ,be a preferred embodiment of the} invention r f: Fig-1 is a fragmentary elevational view of the screen roller assemblyas applied-inits frame and united to a sash, parts being broken away toshowinterior, construction; r
Fig. 1a is a fragmentary perspective vlew showing the means;for.looking'thescreen to.
the'sasl'n' I itselfl. I I, Fig. 3- is: a right hand elevation of the roller shown in Fig. 2, part ofthe operating handle v 1 5 being sectioned.
Fig. 4 is afrag-m'entary left hand elevation of the roller shown in Fig.2. i
Fig. 5 is'an end view of the roller showrr in Fig. 2,"part of the supporting bracketbeing brokenaway: f i
" 6- is a fragmentary perspective sai'cl' screenlto saidisash.
Fig-'2 is a mid-sectional view ofthe roller view 'ofthe detaohed'screen and roller. I
The invention comprises a,. roller 8- on which is adapted" to be'wojund and unwound f screen 9, said 's rzreen' in turn being detach- -Th'e specificpurpose for which the. screen I is intended for use',is in conj unctionwith asidewise'sliding sash, which slides in front of-a stationary sash softh-at'when the roller -06 The stationary sash (not shown) and the 96" s'lidablesa'sh; 10 are usually formed of separate elements adapted for assembling in'an interlocking relation with eachother.
The screen 9 is provided withanend strip .11, a portion of which extends laterally from 7 the screen and is'provided with anaperture. Ila.- There is furtherjfprovided a pivoted locking element 12, provided with anopen slot 126;, and there-is fastened tothe frame of 'the'sash a screw having a locking head 13: with which said locking element 12 cooper ates. Said head-is adapted 'tobe extended through :said aperture, and said locking ele ment through the medium otf said slot en-gag ing the shank oft-he'screw between its head I" andtheinside face of theendstrip to'secure "1. Since, the patentable structure of this 'particular; combination of,sashes and cooperter 'o'f other; applications herei-nbefore Ialfluded to and does not form per se a part of the present invention, further remarks relative thereto will-be unnecessary;'
end a The roller 8, hassecured to-its upper trunnion cap 16L the trunnion .portion- 15 0f which is. .fed into its seat through a bayonet slot 16, in the plate 17 which f orms the lower wall. of the housing 18.
. fTherefis a bracket plate u v upright frame member-20' either window structure which supports the. rol'lerhatits lower end, there belng an aperture through which the-trunnionend portion' 2l of 's'aid 6 roller extends;
bored out part way in order to provide for the insertion of therod 23 with the spring 24 wound therearou'nd'. Said springs 1s clamped to the rod as at 25,.and the upper end of the rod is seated within a metal bearing cap 26 socket-ed within a key block 27in which the end 28 of the spring is secured.
In assembling the latter: described parts within the roller, the entire unit is extended to the required depth intothecavity and'the screw 29 is applied through thewall of the roller and, having had its position measured .to'the correct distance, will penetrate the key block 27 to hold the parts securely in place. After the internal parts have been installed the metal cap 22 is applied, having been internally reinforced with thewasher 30 whereby to strengthen that portion of the cap through which the rod 23 extends. At a point-flush with the bottom side face of the cap 22, the rod 23 is machined to form a square shoulder 31, andbeneathsaid shoulder throughout the remaining portion of the rod its diameter is somewhat diminished.
Onto the squareshoulder thus provided is mounted the ratchet disc 32. This disc is provided with a downwardly directed circularly arranged set of ratchet-teeth 33 and with a flange 34 which extends radially beyond the outside edge of said teeth. In said flange is drilled a hole 35, and there is also provided a hole of equal diameter in the cap 22 with which said hole 35 cooperates. IVhcn it is desired to remove the screen from the roller or to repairit, the pin 36 is inserted in said holes to prevent rotation of the ratchet and thereby maintain the tension in the spring until their assembly is completed and the screen is :againrolled upon the roller, whereuponthe pin is removed.
Adjacent the square shoulder31 is mounted a filler washer 37, and next is applied the ratchet lever 38. The ratchet lever has a body portion of substantially the samediameter as'th at of the filler washer and outwardly directed therefrom is the lever portion and manually accessible handle'39. Saidlever portion is provided with an upturned lip 40 engageable with the teeth of the ratchet whereby applying manual traction to the handle, stores tension in the spring. a 7
There is also a spring dog 41 riveted to the This bracket 19 having an upturned lip 42, engageable with the teeth of the ratchet whereby to maintain the adjusted tension in the spring. Said dog restrains the rotation of the ratchet in one direction and due to its resiliency permits depressing, thereby preventing rotation of the ratchet inthe other direction.-
The filler washer is of sufficient thickness '23 as clearly shown in section in Fig. 2. The
latter construction is 4. and 5.
. In Fig. .3 the ratchet lever is shown seetioned where broken away, the portion of said lever which is broken away being removed in order not to conceal the lip 40 in its operative relation to the ratchetteeth.
Fig. 4 also shows the manner in which the dog 41 engages the teeth 33 of the ratchet. V
In Figsj2, 5 and 6 is shown how the lip 40 isdeveloped into an outcurved flange 46 and 3 provided with an aperture wherein. is fastened the hook 47. There is also provided in the lower end of the end strip 11 an aperture 48 into which said hook is insertable as shown in Fig. 6 whereby the roller is'held against roalso shown in Figs 3,
tation and the screen is thereby maintained in a snugly rolled condition. I As has already been stated the function of the pin 36 is to maintain the tension in the spring at any timethat it is-desired to partially or completely unroll the screen for the purpose of repairng or replacing it;
The entire screen,'roller and adjusting device when assembled as shownin Fig. 6, may be removed bodily from its. housing, simply by withdrawing the trunnionportion 15 out through the open bayonet slot and then liftmg the complete device from the aperture in the bracket 19, there being suflicient clearance between the sleeve 44 and the bracket 19 to permit of a slight lateral movement'of the roller so that it may be removed or replaced. In this assembled position it will be noted that the hook 47 may be connected to the side edge of the screen :to keep the spring'from winding the device; Therefore the pin 36 need be used only when it is not feasible to use the hook. l
The pawl 39 does not extend so far from the roller as to interfere withthe application of the window trim. i
I claim: 1 I
ually adjustable means to rotationally ad- 139 just a Screen roller having tensioning means,
I said adjustable means comprising a ratchet disc rigidly fastened to the tensioning means,
1 the teeth of said disc being directed away from the plane occupied by'said disc, a washer mounted upon the face of said disc andrconcentric therewith, and an arm maintained by said Washer in spaced relation to-said disc, said arm being resilient and extending radially outward beyond said teeth, said arm being provided with a lip tocooperate with said teeth. r I i 2. In a screen roller adjusting device, a roller, there being an axial cavity within an end portion of said roller, an adjustable tensioning rod within said cavity and projecting therefrom beyondan end of'said roller, a tensioning spring operating between said rod 5 and roller, said rodbeing provided with a.
shouldered portion, a dished ratchet disc mounted upon said shoulder portion and provided with ratchet teeth directed longitudi- V nally outward from the roller, a manually operable pawl adapted to rotate said disc in one direction while said roller is mounted upon said bearings, and a dog to prevent reverse rotation thereof while said manualrotation thereof is being effected.
3. In a roller adjusting device, a trunnion projecting from said roller, a rotational ten sioning device interposed between said roller and trunnion, a ratchet disc mounted upon said trunnion to turn therewith, a washer positioned on the outer face of said disc, a manually operable ratchet arm through which said trunnion extends, a sleeve mounted upon said trunnion outwardly from said arm, and'means to retain said sleeve upon said trunnion with its inner end abutting said arm, said arm being resilient to allow it to spring toward and from the teeth of said ratchet and being furnished with a lip V to cooperate with said teeth.
