DUMP-WAGON.
Application filed March 28, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MnLviN Bnnnis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mendon, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dump-Wagon, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a simple and eflicient dump wagon wherein movement of both the sides and bottom of the wagon edects removal of the load.
Another object is to protect the dump actuating mechanism from contact with the contents of the wagon.
A further object is to effect positive dislodgment or breaking up of the load by the action of the movable wagon body parts in order to expedite the dumping thereof.
Vith the foregoing andv other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed,it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a central cross section of the same.
F ig. 3 is an end view of the invention with the tail board removed to show the position of the parts while dumping a load.
Fig. a is a section showing cog and rack used in elevating the bottom of the wagon body.
In the drawings, 1 designates the bolsters upon which are mounted side stakes 2. Supports 3 are secured to the side stakes 2 and are bent inwardly and downwardly to form engaging lingers Ll to prevent inward movement of the sides 5 when elevated. Winding shafts 6 having handles 6 are journaled within openings formed in supports 3 and are provided with `flexible connections 7 secured to the exterior faces of the sides as at S for elevating the sides to a position for dumping as is illustrated in F ig. 8. Pawls 9 are pivoted to supports 3 for engagement with ratchet wheels 10 mounted upon the winding shafts 6 to prevent reverse movement of the shafts and consequent lowering of the sides.
The wagon bottom comprises side wings Specification of Letters Patent.

11 hinged as at 11 to an intermediate portion 12 supported by depending racks v13 provided with integral guides 14 and engaged by pinions 15 operating within the guides 14- and mounted upon a shaft 16 having a handle 16 journaled within the bolster 1. Upon rotation of the shaft 16 through the medium of handle 16, elevation of the intermediate portion 12 is effected and the side wings 11 are disposed in an inclined plane, as illustrated in Fig. 3, for dislodging a load. A pawl 17 pivoted to the bolster 1 engages a ratchet 1S on the shaft and prevents reverse movement of the shaft 16 and consequent lowering of the bottom while dumping the wagon.
Attention is directed to the fact that the rack and ratchet mechanism for elevating the bottom, and the shaft and connections for elevating the sides, are out of the line of load travel during evacuation of the wagon. Guide strips 19 may be annexed to the end boards 20 of the wagon to facilitate the raising of the sides 5.
lVhat is claimed is z 1. A dumping wagon including bolsters and side stakes rising therefrom, supports secured to the Side stakes, inwardly and downwardly bent ends on the supports adapted to straddle the sides of the wagon when in one position, wagon sides slidably mounted within the stakes, a bottom for the wagon, means for elevating the sides to dump the contents of the wagon and means for actuating the bottom to cooperate with the sides in dumping the contents.
2. A dumping wagon including bolsters and side stakes rising therefrom, supports secured to the side stakes, inwardly and downwardly bent ends on the supports, sides slidably mounted within the stakes, a shaft iournaled in the supports and operable to lift the sides, flexible connections between the shaft and sides, a bottom for the wagon, and means for actuating the bottom to cooperate with the lifted sides in dumping the contents of the wagon.
3. A dumping wagon, comprising bolsters, a movable bottom supported on the bolsters; said bottom consisting of a vertically movable intermediate section, and wings hinged to opposed edges of the intermediate section; frames including opposed side bars depending from the intermediate section, one of said bars provided with a groove in its inner face, a rack formed on the opposed face of the other bar, a shaft journaled in as my own, I have hereto axed my signathe bolsters, pnons on the shaft and enterture in the presence of two witnesses. .infr the Grooves and engagno' the racks of th frams, and means for rottng the shaft MELVIN BURRIS to elevate the `nterlfnedvate section and dump Witnesses:
