WILLIAM OSCAR SHADBOLT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TRUCK.
Application filed January 25, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM UsoAR SHAD- BoL'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State ,of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to that class of trucks which is provided with a carrying body adapted to have one end elevated so as to tilt the body and discharge the contents thereof, and one of the objects of the invention is to produce such a truck capable i of operating in a simple and eiiicient man ner.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices and members, as shown in the drawings and described in this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a truck embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is top view of the same, part of the body being broken away.
In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiment thereof which I have selected for illustration in the `accompanying drawings and description in this specification, I provide running gear of the usual or any suitable form, upon which is supported a frame, comprising side members 7 and end members 8. On the side members 7 are mounted transverse members 9, preferably each of different height, decreasing toward the rear of the truck, as shown in Fig. 1, and upon the members 9 are secured longitudinal members 10. On the under side of the members 10, near their forward ends, is journaled a shaft 11, provided with a gearwheel 12 at its outer end and a drum 13 at its inner end upon which is secured one end of a chain 15. A worm 14 is journaled on the frame side member 7, and is adapted to engage with the gear-wheel 12; this worm is shown broken away in the drawings, but in practice may be extended forward be yond the end of the truck and provided with a crank, or may be operated in any suitable manner so as to rotate the same and thereby wind up the chain 15 upon the drum 13. Journaled in supports 19, eX- tending rearwardly from one of the members 9, are pulleys 20.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov.. 27, i917.
Serial No. 74,162.
Pivotally secured to the frame, as shown at 16, or in any suitable manner, is a. carry ing body 17, which may if desired be provided with a tail-gate 18 of the usual or any ordinary form. Extending downwardly from the bottom of the carrying body are bars 21, pivotally secured thereto, and to the lower ends of said bars are secured the ends of chains 22, which pass upward and over the pulleys 2O and have their other ends secured to the ends of a movable member 23, to the middle portion of which the rear end of the chain 15 is secured.
The operation of my invention will be more or less obvious from an examination of the drawings and from what has been eX- plained above, but it may be briefly pointed out that upon rotating the worm 14: the gearwheel 12 and the shaft 11 and drum 13 are operated, thereby winding up the chain 15 upon said drum. This draws forward the member 23 and the chains 22, which, passing over the pulleys 20, draw the bars 2l upward and thereby tilt the carrying body 17 upon its pivotal connection 16.
y invention is particularly adapted for use upon motor trucks, and it will be obvious that the arrangement and combination of parts comprising the body tilting means is such as to provide a simple and eiiicient elevating and tilting mechanism which will clear the motor and transmission devices.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
In a truck, the combination with running gear, a frame, a pair of pulleys journaled in said frame, and a carrying body pivotally secured to said frame and provided with downwardly extending elevating bars; of a shaft journaled in said frame, a chain adapted to be wound upon said shaft, a movable member to the middle portion of which said chain is secured, and a pair of chains each of which passes over one of said pulleys and has one end secured to one end of said movable member and the other end to one of said elevating bars.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 20th day of January, 1916.
WILLIAM OSCAR SHADBOL'I.
