Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK VAN HEU- SEN SKINNER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the town of Granonoque, in the Province of Ontario and the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hames and the objects of the invention are to facilitate constructing the hame in such a manner that it may be conveniently made from one piece of steel with the overtop finished in such a manner that while the core of the hame is suitably positioned abetter hame is obtained which is easier to manufacture, more durable and not liable to go out of order.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hame embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the top end of the hame showing the manner 'of finishing the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the top end of the hame showing the flange or tongue open, which flange is designed to be bent over the top to finish the hame.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved hame which is constructed of one piece of steel provided at the top end with a tongue or flange 10, the hame being of any usual cross-section and having a wooden or other core or filling therein. In constructing this hame, the strip of metal is bent into substantially U-shape in condition to receive the core or filling and the edges 11 and 12 of the strip are then bent over to inclose the core. After this operation the hame is flattened into shape whereupon it is bent adjacent to the upper and lower ends in the manner best calculated to fit a horses collar, whereupon the hanie is punched to receive the trimmings 13.
During these operations it will be under stood that the tongue or flange 10 remainsv open or in extending position, and subsequently the tongue or flange 10 is bent over the upper openend of the heme and is secured to the top thereof by means of the rivet 14.
When the hame is constructed in this manner the core or filling will conform to the bending of the hame and after the tongue or flange 10 is bent into position the core is secured in that position best calculated to give a proper reinforcing to the finished hame. By constructing the hame of a single strip of metal there is less liability of failure in the structure, while at the same time the ease by which it can be manufactured has many advantages over the older method of manufacturing this type of article.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope'of the claim constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
A one piece metallic cover for a hame comprising a substantially rectangular blank having a pointed extension at one end nearer one longitudinal edge than the other whereby a core may be encircled by the cover and the extension bent over the top and down the other side so that the core will be completely enveloped by the cover.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
