OF T; Louis, MISSOURI. Latte'rsPatcnt No. 85,843, dated Jamukvry 12, 1869.
DEPROVEIEENT m MANUFACTURE OI CURVED-ELBOWS.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent snd-making part'of the sum.
To all whom it comm Be itlmown that we, Fnunmn'cn G. Nmnn'mennus audwmnmnllimnmnemuspfthe city and county, of St. Louis,in the State of-Missouri, have invented a new and usefill Improvement in the Manufacture of Curved. Elbows for Stove-Pipes; and we do hereby de'-' clare the following to be a full and exact description thereof; reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, forming a part of this specification, in 'which-- Figure 1 is a plan of the form of metal-blank, out
.ofwhich the elbows are stamped;
liigure 2, an elevation of our improved curred elbow; an
Figure 3,'a transverse section in the line a: a: of fig. 2, with the thickness of the metal greatly exaggerated,
The nature of our invention consists in ,the formation of curved elbows for stove-pipes, by stamping up two longitudinal halyes or secn'ons from metallic blanks,
slitted in that portion thereof which is to constitute the inner part of the curve therein, so that the surplus of metal in the curve shallbe takenup by overlapping at the slits, and uniting the said halves by a suitable v lockjoin't.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a metal-blank, of suitable form, for the half of anelbowf L b, the slits cut therein, from a point approaching the edge .of the inner, and extending about midway to the outer edge; The'number of the slits maybe greater or less, but we have found three of them sufiicient in elbows made of ordinary metal.
The blank, A, properly shaped and slitted, is next placed between suitable metallic dies, and stamped between them into the longitudinally-curved form required in the elbow, and with a semicircular section.
In being thus bent and curved into shape, the excess of metal, in the inner portion of the curve along each of the slits,is' taken up by the overlapping of one side of the slit-oveuthe opposite edge thereof, as indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 2, so that a regular, even, finished'curve is obtained on the under or inner as well as the upper side of each section of the elbow, without straining, breaking, or crimping the metal.
The edges of each half or sectional-e folded or bentover into a hooked shape, (as indicated in fig. 3 9f the drawings,) so far as the curve extends, the remaining portion at each end being left projecting to overlap a corresponding plain edge on the opposite section. The two sections are united by interlocking their hooked edges as shown in said fig. 3. and .then riveting the overlapping edges ateach end to-colnplcte the elbow.
The ends of the elbow, formed by the overlapping edgesof the two divisions, are respectively, enlarged,
(see a, fig. 2,) to pass over the next lower straight section, B, of the stovcpipe, upon which the elbow is to be placed, andcontracted (see a', fig. 2) to enter the .horizontahsection of pipe, 0, to' be placed thereon.
As the metal-is left in its normal state, and is not subjected to'excessive strain in the formation of our 'im'proved curved elbows, as herein. described, a cheaper quality of iron maybe used in their manufacture, and their cost thus greatly reduced.
.The longitudinal divisions of which they are composed can be closely packed for transportation, and be readily put together for use and sale as required, after having reached tbeirdestination, thus lessening the cost of shipping them from point to point.
. Having thus fully described our invention,
We claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 A curved stove-pipe elbow, constructed in two longitudinal divisions, wherein the surplus metal of the innet curve thereof is taken up bythe overlapping of the edges of one or more transverse slits in said divisions, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
The foregoing specification of improved stove-pipe elbow signed, this 19th day of November, 1868, in the presence 'of- 'F. G. NIEDRINGH AUS. Witnesses: WM. F. NIEDRINGHAUS.
