BLACKBOARD-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, l1918.
Application led May 15, 1917. Serial No. 168,800.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, GILBERT Gr. SATRUM and INGVALD B. SNAn'rEMo, citizens of the United States, residing at Oslo Settlement, in the county of Hansford and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blackboard-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification. y
Our invention relates to blackboard cleanf ers and has for its objects; first, to provide a blackboard cleaner of a simple and durable construction, second to provide a blackboard cleaner in which is incorporated a water reservoir having manually controlled means for communicating the water of the reservoir to the rubbing element of the cleaner, thirdly, to provide a blackboard cleaner in which is incorporated a rubbing element and a fluid chamber communicating therewith, the rubbing element being easily and quickly removable from the main body portion of the device to replace or clean the same.
With these and other objects in view which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view in oblique perspective of a blackboard cleaner embodying our invention.
Fig. 2 is a central sectional elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the sponge retaining cage of the device.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the body of the device with the sponge retaining cage removed therefrom.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the various views.
In the drawings 1 designates generally the body of the device. The body has a fluid reservoir 2 formed therein having the longitudinal sides thereof shaped to fit the handle, as designated at 3, in Fig. 1. The bottom wall of the fluid reservoir, which is designated at 4, is flat and a flange 5 projects downwardly therefrom and forms an inclosure below said bottom wall. Two ports G are formed in the bottom wall of the fluid reservoir. A stud 7 is secured upon the under side of the wall at a point intermediate the two ports 6. A valve 8 is pivotally mounted upon the stud 7 and has 11 is formed in the flange 5 and an actu- -ating handle 12 of the valve 8 projects therefrom and has a manipulating knob 18 mounted thereon eXteriorly of the inclosure. The portion of the valve 8 which lies between the surfaces 9, as designated at 4, which is engaged by the stud 7 is resilient and -coperates with said stud to hold the surfaces 9 in tight engagement with the under surface of the bottom wall 4. A cap 15 is screw threaded into a filler hole 16 formed in one of the end walls of the reservoir adjacent the top thereof.
A sponge retaining cage 17 is provided and comprises vertical sides 18 forming an inclosure and adapted to fit within the inclosure of the flange 5. A pair of down wardly shouldered projections 19 are formed upon opposite sides of the cage 17 and are adapted to engage corresponding upwardly projecting shoulders 20 formed on the flange 5 whereby the sponge retaining cage may be properly secured within the inclosure of the flange 5. A series of cross rods 21 are movably secured to the sides of the sponge retaining cage and extend across the inclosure of the same and are adapted to pass through a sponge 22 or other suitable rubbing material to hold the same within the cage. T hesponge is preferably rectangular in shape and having a greater height than the sides 18 so that a portion thereof may project below the bottom edges of said side. The top of the sponge is flush with the top edge of the sides 18, said edge being considerably lower than the bottom 4. The
engagement of the shoulders 19 and 20 secures the cage within the flange 5 with the bottom edge of said cage flush with the bottom edge of the flange whereby suflicient space is provided above the cage and sponge for the valve 8. lVhen it is desired to remove the cage from the flange the sides upon which the shoulders 19 are formed are moved toward each other to disengage the same from the shoulders. The cage is then lifted out from engagement with the flange.
of which extendbeyond the sides7 the holes in the easing'th'rough which they pass being countersunk from the outer suri'aeeofy thel sides, as designated at 23, toraceoinmodate the bent over ends ofthe eros rods.
Having thus fully described our inventin; iveclaim:
A blackboard cleaner comprising a Water receptacle of elongated form7k having itef longitudinal sides made to conformY to the hand and havingv perorations in its bottom, a flangev projecting below said bottom and forming a rectangular easing,l a valve on the bottom for controlling said perforations,
shoulders on said flange, a sponge cage of 20 less height than the flange and adapted to*Y it Within the casing, spring projections on said Cage for engaging with said shoulders to hold the cage Within the easing and 1neans-.
for lremovably holding' thespongein said 2.x
cage.
