Specification of Lettersiatent; Patented J 311.29, 1918.
Application filed April 2', 1917. Serial no. 159,302.
To all whom it mag concern: I
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. OUsLnY,
' a citizen of the United States,residing at St. James, in the county of Phelps and State ot Missouri, have inventedcertain'new and useful Improvements inGold-Dust Col lectors; and I do declare'tlie following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i p
This invention relates todustcatchersand moreparticularly to that class of dust catcherswlnch are used in dentalwor'k orfwhenever abrading operations are c'arried'on upfon valuable material, the d'ust'of which itis desired to collect and save. The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved dust collector of this character which maybe readily attached'to theperson of an operator or secured to a stationary support as desiredand is provided with a receptacle at its lower end for I o e g the dust therein which may b readily detached from the main body of the collectorwhen'ever desiredp Another object of my invention is to providea device of this character having a 'fora'minous' guard whereby, should the plate or material being Worked upon be .acciclen tally dropped Withinthe body of the collector, it wiljl be prevented from becoming lodged in the du t collecting receptacle car ried on the lower end of'the collector.
With these and othergenieral objects in view, which will appear from the description, my inventioniresides in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the manner of application of my invention; Fi 2 i a Side. elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of'mycollector; i
Fig. 4 is'a rear elevation thereof; v
,Fig. 15 is a perspective view ofa suppor for the collector;
, Fig. 6' isa side elevation showing my collector as attached to the'wall or stationary v suppo rt.
Briefly described, mylinvention comprises substantially a funnelsshaped body provided With a detachably secured dust collecting re:
ce'p'tacle. on its, lower end and having efz'itended across its top an arched transparent guard member. The sides of the body below the arched guard member are deeply recessed in order to provide apertures there-'.
through". for the insertion of the hands of an operator and thebody portionof the collector is provided with a hingedly secured :hoolnwherebyit may be suspended from the shoulders of an operator. An additional attachingmeinber isprovided at the back of the receptaclewhereby the, same may be secured upon a Waller any suitable stationarysup'port as desired. Means are also provided at the lower end of the body to prevent the dropping into the dust collecting receptacle of any plates or other materials being worked upon, should the same become accidentally disengaged while being held within the bodyv of the collector. l
Referring more particularly to'the drawings and describing my invention in detail,
my improved collector comprisesa substanv tially funnel-shaped body 1 having a fiat rear side 2 anda substantially similar front" side The bottom of the body 1 terminates in a spout 4 provided with an annular-shoulder 5 depending rtherefrom' and internally threaded'to receive therein the externally threaded head of adust collecting receptacle 6 which may be composed of any suitable] material which in this embodiment comprises glass, Adapted; tobe disposed inthe shoulder portion :5 and resting on the head foraminous guard member 8 which extends across the mouth of the dust collecting yreceptacle and. forms an effectual guard, whereby to permit the passage therethrough of the small particles of dust to be collected, and which will prevent the dropping oflarge pieces of material therethrough, should they become disengaged from the toolsused by the operator.
The front Wall or side or the body or my.
of the receptaclefi is a' frame 7 carrying v improved collector is provided with an'u p' wardly extending lip .9 and therear wall 2' a p v is provided with a similar upWardlyeXte-nding portion 10 having its upper edge dispose-dconsiderably above the upper edge of the projecting lip 9 on the front wall 3 of. the collectonf The upper edges ofthe lip '9 and upwardly extending portion 10 are tormedflof equal length and are connected at their side edges by 'meansof a pair of arched metal strips 11 suitably secured at o their ends to the upper edges of thep'orti' o'n and lip 9a nd between which is extended and securedthereinga sheetof transparent.
1. material such as mica, celluloid or any suitalso to provide ameansjwhereby anoperatorrentportion disposed at the front of the :re
' ceptacle extending between the" upwardly within the body of the collector.
able'substa'nce to form the guard.member for the top of the body of the collector, and
may be enabled to examine thework held Owing; to the disposition of the upper edges ofthe upwardly extending portion 10 of the rear wall 2 and the lip?) o11 ,tl1e .front I wall 3,:the 'arched'strips or name support 'ing 'membersfll will be extended down wardly at thefrontwall of: thecollector and} having-a transparent guardmember secured therebetween will .providenot only a transparent topfforthereceptacle but a transparc-eptacleas well, thereby insuring a; more efliclient lighting of the interior of the collector. Spaced below the arched supporting strips 11, the side edges 121015 the body of the reprojecting portion "and the lip aredeeply recessed to provide suificlently large apertures at'the sides of the collector, whereby to permit, the insertionof an operators hands to manipulate tools within the interior of the collector. Between the edges of the aperture thus formed andthefront and rear walls 01' the body of the collector islefta suitable margin so that the hands of an operator when engaged in theapertures will efi'ectually closeithe same.
{As a means of providingasupport for the collector, I provide a rod'l3 hingedly con nected to the back of the'collector bymeans of a flange 1d formed on the upper edge of the v projecting portion 10 andsurrounding the rod. 13 to retain the same thereon. At its wardly extending portions 15 having hooks 16 formed on their upper ends and adapted r 'to be engaged over theshoulders oflan operopposite ends the rod is provided with up ator when-it is desired to use the collector.
' :Owing'to the flatrear side of the body'lofthe collector, when the same isengaged with the hooks over the shoulders of an"oper ator,turning or twisting of the body 'of the collector will 'b'e effectually prevented. An
aperturedfflange 17 is formed on the upsupported on the wall or on a stationary cent the lower" portion of the body of the collector upon a suitable support.
:l beunderstood that I donot limit myself I specifically to these details as shown and described as it is obvious that the body of the collector may be made of any suitable materialjinstead of aluminum which I preferably employ and that minor changes in :thedetailsof its construction may be made without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention and defined between the scope of thevfollowingclaims Iclaim: 7 1. A dust collector as described comprising asubstantially funnel-shaped bojdyfa dust] receptacle to be secured on its lower end,a foraminous guard to beidisposed on the lower endofisaid, body, a'tra'nsparent guard atthe top'thereof, the sidesof said body being apertured toifpermit-of the in.-. c sertion of thehands of anioperator. therethrough.
