SHINGLE-GAGE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, i918.
Application led August 23, 1916. Serial No. 116,550.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS R. CoNDoN and THOMAS SCHURMAN, subjects of the King of England, residing at Summerside,
in the Province of Prince Edward and Dodrawing.
This invention relates to improvel'nents .in shingle gages, one object of the invention being the provision of a of this type in which instead of stretching a chalk line and marking for the next succeeding butt line of the shingles, the present gage is slid with a portion thereof engaging the butt line of the already laid shingles to mark with a pencil or other marking device the butt line for the succeeding layer, there being adjustable means for regulating the pencil carrying member and locking the same at such desired adjustment.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a shingle gage which is simple,
durable and inexpensive in construction and which is thoroughly eiicient and practical 1n use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the gage showing the same in use.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a strip rectangular in cross section which has marked thereupon the gage scales 6, while secured rigidly to one end thereof and at right angles thereto is the shingle butt engaging member?.
The adjustable gage consists of a rectangular block 8 which is cut away so as to provide a lateral transverse slot 8. The block 8 is also formed with a rectangular opening 9 substantially at right angles to the plane of said slot 8 and communicating with the latter. The rectangular strip 5 passes through said slot and slidably fits the rectangular opening in the block 8. Formed longitudinally of said block 8 is a recess 10 which opens out so as to communicate with said slot 8. 'This longitudinal groove or recess 10 is formed at one end of the block and has substantially parallel side walls adapted to form a clam so as to frictionally hold a pencil 11 in adjusted position. The block 8 itself provides one side wall whereas the portion 12 of the block provides the other side wall. An adjustable bolt 13 is tapped through said block at the end opposite said clamp and is adapted to engage said strip so as to secure said block upon said strip.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that the pencil carrying member may be adjusted upon the member 5to -lock it at any desired position thereon, according to the scale and with the shingle butt engaging member 7 resting against the shingle butts and the present gage moved transversely of the roof, the pencil will be caused to mark a line at the proper distance upon the shingle to gage the butt end position of the next layer.
What we claim as new is A device of the class described composed of a rectangular block, said block being cut away to provide a lateral transverse slot and a rectangular opening communicating with said slot, a rectangular strip passing through said slot and slidably fitting the rectangular opening in said block, said block being also formed with a longitudinal recess opening out into so as to communicate with said slot, said longitudinal recess being formed at one end of said block and havin substantially parallel side walls adapted to form a clamp, and an adjustable bolt tapped through said block at the end opposite said clamp and adapted to engage said strip so as to secure said block upon said strip.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
THOMAS R. CONDON. THOMAS SCHURMAN.
