SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 391,032, dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed June 16, 1888. Serial No. 277,341.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW A. DnIsooLL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at North Branch, in the county of Grayson and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Square, Plumb, and Level, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is a device intended for use in the erection of brick buildings, the object being to lay the courses of brick at the corners true and level by its aid, and plumb both sides of the corners simultaneously; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of a corner of a brick building with the device attached. Fig. 2 represents a side view from the opposite side and with the upper portion of the rule turned up to form a square. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the upper section of the gage-rule detached and showing its inner side.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the body of the device having rectilinear parallel edges, a transverse rectangular opening, a, near its top, and a plumb-mark, a, running down from said opening and coinciding with the central longitudinal line of the body.
B is a transverse strip standing across the face of the body and adjoining its end, and b is a vertical strip standing downward from one end of the former.
O is a vertical gage-rule attached to the face of the body and projecting over the edge thereof on the side opposite the strip 1), and making a right angle, 0, with the body. The said rule consists of the lower fixed section, D, and the upper movable section, E, which is pivoted in the opening a by means of the screw (which passes through the slot c) and the thumb-nut e, as shown, and which, when turned down against a stop, 6, secured to the face of the body, is aligned with the lower section, D, of the gage-rule. The two sections are graduated downward on their continuous outer edges to inches and parts (preferably sixteenths) of an inch. The section E has on its outer edge, adjoining its upper end, a rectangular recess, F, having at its outer end a square shoulder, f.

When the two sections of the rule are aligned, the screw 0 is in the end of the opening a above the lower section, and the shoulder f rests below and against the transverse strip B. When it is desired to use the device as a square, the nut c is loosened, the screw 0 moved to the opposite end of the opening a, and the section E turned upward till the strip B rests in the recess F. The section E is then at right angles to the body.
G is a metal strip secured transversely across the edge of the body opposite the section D of the gage-rule, and H H are clampbars passing through openings in the ends thereof. The said clamp-bars have their outer ends threaded and engaged by thumb-nuts h, and their inner ends, h, bent at right angles inward.
When the device is applied to the corner of a building with said corner in the angle 0 made by the body and the gage-rule, the points or ends it, which are edged, may be inserted between the vertical joints of the bricks in the faces of the corner, and by turning up the thumb-nuts the device may be clamped in place.
I is a line having its upper end inserted in a slit or kerf coinciding with the upper end of the plumb-mark a, and provided with the plumb-bob'i at its lower end. By means of the said plumb line the device can be changed in position on the corner till it is vertical thereon,and the faces of the corners can be carried up plumb.
The device projects above the brick already laid, and the fresh courses are laid with the corners of the end bricks in the angle 0, which, when the device is plumb, will insure the corner going up plumb.
The upper section, E, of the gage-rule can be turned up, as described, to ascertain if the courses are level and thelatter corrected thereby at the corners. The gage-rule can always be seen by the brick-layers, and they are guided thereby as to the thickness of the layers of mortar.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The herein-described device composed of the body, the vertical gage-rule extending down and projecting over one of the edges of the body, and the clamp secured to the opposite edge and comprising the metal strap perforated atits ends, the clamp-rods having their inner ends bent inward and their outer ends threaded, and the thumb-nuts engaging said ends, substantially as specified. 5 2.
