Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 8, 1916. Serial No. 102,540.
catlon.
This lnventlon has relat1on to brushes,
" and an object thereof is to provide a brush adapted for use in cleaning milk bottles or the like, with brushing elements for engaglng all parts of the interior of the bottles and forcleaning the cap seator annular.
shoulder which is usually formed at the mouth of milk bottles.
Another object of the invention isto provide a brush of the character described which is manually operable, and in which the cap seat cleaning element is movable relatively to the other brushing element so as to adapt the device for use in bottles of various dimensions and capacities.
In addition to the foregoing, my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference, throughout the several views in which they appear;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a brush constructed after the manner of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of a resilient member for engaging the handle of the brush and forming a part of a brushing element to retain said element in adjusted position relative t the handle.
Fig. l, is a vertical section through the cup of the device showing the internal structure thereof.
While I have designed my invention with special reference to its use in cleaning milk bottles, it is to be understood that it is equally well applicable for cleaning other kinds of bottles in the present form of the device or with a slight alteration. To proceed with a description of my device, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which 1 indicates a handle which may be circular in cross section and provided at one end with a brush element 2. The lower end of the brush element is illustrated as having a rounded exterior for facilitating its use in reaching all corners of a bottle. The brush element however may be formed in any manner desired.
A second brush element indicated generally at 3 is designed. to clean the cap seats of milk bottles, which cap seat is in the nature of an, annular shoulder formed at the mouth of the milk bottle for the purpose of receiving the circular cap which forms a closure for the bottle. The brush element in question comprises a circular inverted cup 4:, having an annular flange 5, and a central opening 6 through which the handle- 1 passes. Resilient securing members are provided within the cup element for releasably securing said element to the handle, and they comprise each a single strand of wire having straight portions 7 which are adapted to be disposed substantially diametrically across the inner surface of the cup element 4 and formed with curved por tions 8 which coincide with the central opening 6, said curved portions engaging the handle when the brush element 3 is disposed thereon. The resilient elements are further formed at points either side of the curved portions 8 with convolutions 9 to give resiliency to the terminals 10 which are curved and conform to the curvature of the flange 5 of the brush element.
WVith reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that with the element 3 disposed upon the handle 1, the resilient members are urged toward the center of the cup element thereby tightly engaging the sides of the handle. The cleaning element is in the form of a circular brush 11 which is held within the cup lwith its bristles extending downward.
In operation, the brush element 2 is in serted within the bottle to be cleaned, and the brush element 3 moved downward along the handle until the bristles engage the mouth of the bottle. Upon rotating the handle, the interior of the bottle and the cap seat are simultaneously and effectually cleaned from adhering particles of matter. Owing to the continuous engagement of the resilient members of the element 3 with the handle, said element will be retained at any position to which it may be moved relative to said handle.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations thereln may be made, and-I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction, or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. A bottle cleaning implement comprising a handle, a brushing element provided upon one end thereof, a second brushing element mounted on the handle and comprising a cup element having a central opening through which the handle passes, resilientmembers having portions extending diametrlcally across the 1nner face of the cup element with their intermedlate portions engaging the handle and their extremities Conies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
engaging the sides of said cup element, and a cleaning element secured Within said cup element.
2. A bottle cleaning implement comprising a handle, a brushing element provided uponone-end thereof, and a second brushing element mounted on the handle comprising a cup shaped element having a central opening through which the handle passes, resilient members within the cup member adapted to engage the sides thereof, and the handle to frictionally retain the cup element in any position subsequent to adjustment longitudinally of the handle, and a cleaning element secured within the cup element.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
