Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK P. Woon, a subject of the King of- Great Britain residin in Oak Park, in the county of (look and tate of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction-Top Paper Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to containers and has more particular reference to containers comprised of a fibrous or paper body having ends of' fibrous or other suitable material and closed at one end with a friction closure. w
A principal object of this invention is the improvement of friction closures for cans, an aim being to provide a tight, rigid closure so disposed with respect to the end of the body of the container that danger of inadvertent removal will be minimized.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a container wherein the closure while seated in a cover ring will be held in place by friction within the ring and also by the body of the container.
A still further object of the invention is the rovision of a container having a paper or brous body and closed by a friction closure disposedbeneath or within the end of the bod Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation shown antially in section of a container and riction closure embodying my invention;

For the purpose of i1 ustratin my invention I have shown it embodie in a container comprising a body formed of a pinrality of plies 4 of paper or other fibrous material, although it will be manifest as the invention is better understood that the body may vary in construction without departing from the invention. The body, near its top,
. is depressed inwardly at 5 and a part thus disposed within the container is mashed together at 6 to form a rigid inwardly extending flange. Upon this flange is seated a.
cover holding ring 7, preferably also of fibrous material and ofv suflicient thickness ,constructed and arranged that the inge exerts considerable pressure mug and is bowed inwardly in a curl, as seen at 10. This provldes a peculiarly rigid construction and the whole may, if desired, be coated with any suitable covering 11 extending both about the body and the ring. 1 This covering 1s preferably in the form of some proofing substance and positioning of the ring either before proofing or immediately thereafter Wlll cause the rin to be tightly held in place through shrinkage of the body in drying.
A friction'closure 12 is seated Within the ring 7 and this closure is provided with an annular friction wall 13 adapted to engage tightly within the ring 7. Beyond the friction wall 13 a folded flange 14 is provided which fits tightly within the curled end 8 of the container body and beneath the inwardly extending curved part 10 thereof, thereby providing a double friction engagement between the closure and body, one part of said double friction engagement being present between the ring 7 and the friction wall 13 of the closure, and the other part between the edge of the flange 14 and the curved edge 8 of the body.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that a closure so constructed and seated will lie beneath or within the top end of the body so that the edge of this closure is prevented from contact with surrounding objects which would tend to unseat it, thereby minimizing danger of inadvertent opening of the package in handling or packing. The container is thus securely and safely closed.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merel a preferred embodiment thereof.

A container comprising a fibrous body which is compressed endwise to form an inwardly extending rigid flange, the exterior of the body being left continuously cylindrical and substantiall smooth, a ring seated on said flange an adapted to receive a closure, the end edge of the body bein curled over inward and abutted against said ring, and a proofing covering 11 on all faces of the body by which the same is shrunk on said ring and held in formed shape.
2. A container comprising a fibrous body which is compressed endwise to form an inwardly extending rigid flange, the exterior of the body being left continuously cylindrical and substantially smooth, a ring seated on said flange, the end edge of the body being curled over inward and abutted a ainst said ring, and a removable friction c osure having a depressed portion fitting within said ring, and havin a flange which is seated on the top of said ring.
3. A container comprising a fibrous body which is compressed endwise to form an inwardly extending rigid flange, the exterior of the body being left continuously cylindrical and substantiall smooth, a ring seatedon said flange, t e end edge of the body being curled over inward and abutted against said ring and formed with an 1nwardly overhanging part 10, and a removable friction closure having a depressed portion fitting within said ring, and having a flange which is seated on the top of said ring with its edge under the said overhanging part of the curled end edge of the body.
