specification of Letters Patent.
J Patented; J an.122,1918.
..;Application filed-June 12,1916. .Scriafll'o; 103,298.
To all whom it may concern.
,Be it; known that. I, l-lonarro GIL MOR,
'Washingtomi-n the Districtaof Columbia,
shave invented anew and useful lmproveings.
This invention relates ;.to rail anchors,
: anticreepers, or devices forpreventing the :creeping of the rails-of, railways rand ,one
ofits objects is to form a simple device which may be attached to or used inconnection witlrthe tie plate and which AVlllilJB lseflieient in preventing the creeping action.
Another object is to provide a device which shall be eflicient in: resisting the tend- .ency of. the rail to ,move in either: direction.
:The invention is illustrated in a preferred 1 embodiment. in the .accompanying..drawing,
in which .Jigure l'isianzend viewshowing. the rail in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the device in' position upon the rail.
:Jl ig. 3 is a.sectionalwiewshowing-the parts in one-of the-positions assumed during the placing of the device upon the rail.
b llllllfll letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
-In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, A represents the rail having a head portion B andabase portion U, which rests'upon the tie plate .D.
The tie plateD inturn is supported. by the tie E, a portion of. one of which isshown g in the drawings, .andis secured thereto...by
the spikes or screws F.
The spring G is preferably formed? from 40- a sheet or plate and has a portion 1, which is provided withtwoarms or flanges K, :and is-arranged to be forced. into an aperture L in the tie plate D between the edge of the rail baseC and the tie plateD so th:? the corners-M 'will bitezinto the rail edge. The arms or flangesK are tapered rtN' to facilitate entering and forcing the portion I of the springG between the rail and the tie plateD. .Thespring G also has aotwo-arms or-flanges' O; which, whenthe spring is in the operative position have corners P engaging' the upper surface :of the rail vloaseC. :At'the upper endiof the spring G there aressurfaces. Q which-zem .gage the:undenside;of.;the;headi;oftherail. .The portion... I of; the spring. .G. is. connected gto. the body of;thegspringibyrthetrelatively fiat portion R. The tie: pilateL,D.-may havega -rib;S arranged totengage one;ed-ge' of the .:rail base;;and. .,the. aperture. L:may. be provided withgspecial stiffeningT to increase the bearing of the portion. I of-the spring G with the tie plate D.
.=The.device is placed in position-by entering the portionlofthe spring G in the aperture L of the tie plate D, which has already been placed upon the tie and secured thereto by the spikes or screws T and driving or otherwise forcing itdown :so that the arms orflanges'K are: forced in between the rail edge and the tie plate-with'the corners M biting intotheedgeof-therail base until :the lower edges of .the arms or. flanges 0 bear upon the upper corner of the. rail base QOas illustrated inFig- 3. This forces the rail. base edge opposite the portion 1 of the spring into contact with the rib -S of the 5 tie plate D orwiththe spikes F if there be ..norib andcauses the railedge, tobe gripped .by the biting .cornersUh-fof. the. arms. K of :theportionl. 'lVhen the device is inthis position the surfaces Qof the upper endof athespring- G-will be about to engagewith ithe under side of the head Bof the rail and byforcing the upper portion'ofzthe spring LG. transverse.:.to the-rail, either by driving yitwith a ham-meror by the use of a suitable wrench the spring G may be forced to the.
final operative. position: shown in Figs. 1 --andu2. "While. being soforced transversely of the-rail the portion R ofthe spring G tacts-as aflat spring and thearnis 0 also "formw-ith thebody of the spring G a spring and as' the-arms 0 contact with the upper surface of the rail base C theportion of the spring vGr; formed by'that part of the body ;and the; arms 0 tends to flatten somewhat with the cornerv P ofthe arms 0 ineontact with the upper surface of the rail base; and 'in the final operative position of the parts, shown in=Figs. 1 and 2, thespring G is .pressin-gathe surfaces Q'upwardly against the underside of the rail head B by the-combined spring action ofthe fiat springpor- 'tiOH R and the spring action of theportion -.:carry-ing the arms 0 and,- at theisainet-ime, the spring G is:pressingdownwardly;upon atherupper -.sur;tacerof the-..-r.a;il;b.ase .0 and the spring G, intending to resume the form from which it has been sprung, locks the parts in position, the rail head B preventmg any upward movement of the-spring Gr and the engagement of the portion I with the tie plate preventing any lateral movement of the spring G.
It will also be readily seen and understood that if the grip of the device upon the rail is not sufficient when the parts have been placed in their operative position to withstand the forces tending to move the rail or cause it to creep, very slight movement of the rail in relation to the tie plate will cause deflection of one or the other of the arms K (depending upon the direction in which the rail tends to move) and also of the arms 0 and that this will increase the biting effect of the biting-corners M and P upon the edge and upper surface of the rail base C and thus automatically increase the resistance of the device to further movement of the rail.
It will also be seen that the device will be eflicient in preventing movement of the rail in either direction.
While I have described the invention as embodied in a preferred construction, modifications might be made without departing from the principles of the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be understood as limiting the invention to the particular construction, arrangement and devices shown and described, except so far as these limitations are specifically set forth in the claims herein.
