To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, WiLLIAM F. YARYAN and LOUIE H. CHAMBERLAIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Clarinda, in the county of Page, and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snap-Flask Jackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved oldable and extensible snap flask jacket for use on molds, in casting, the object of the invention being to provide an improved snap flask jacket which may be adjusted to fit molds of various sizes and shapes, whether of oblong rectangular form, trapezoidal or rhomboidal and to also fit molds which taper in one direction; another object being to provide an improved snap flask jacket which when not in use may be compactly Jfolded and arranged on a shelf or other support out ofthe way, and to take up but very little room.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a snap flask jacket constructed in accordance with our invention and as extended and arranged for use on a mold of oblong rectangular form.
Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of one corner of the snap Hask jacket as arranged to fit on a mold which tapers in one direction and is smaller at the upper side than at the lower side.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of our improved snap flask jacket, showing the same compactly folded and as adapted to be placed on a shelf or other support and arranged out of the way.
Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view through one side of the snap flask jacket.
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional perspective view of one of the hinges which connect the side and end walls of the jacket at the corners of the jacket and adapt said side and end walls to be folded or to be arranged at any desired angle according to the shape of the mold.

Our improved snap flask jacket comprises side walls 1, end walls 2 and universal joint hinges 3 which connect the side and end walls together at the corners of the jacket. Each side wall comprises a pair of plates 4, 5, of iron, steel or any other suitable material and which plates are provided respectively with outstanding upper and lower rims or flanges 6, 7. The width of each plate 5 is slightly less than that of the plate 4 so that the said plates may be arranged in overlapping relation and with the flanges of the plate 5 engaging the inner surfaces of the flanges 6 of the plate 4 so that said flanges of the plates coact to hold the plates in line with each other and also assist in guiding the plates and enabling them to be moved longitudinally with relation to each other to shortened or extended sides as may be required by the size of the mold on which the acket is to be used.
Each end wall 2 also comprises a pair of plates 8, 9 of iron, steel or other suitable material and which are similar in construction to the plates of the side walls, said plates 8, 9 being respectively provided with out-turned upper and lower flanges l0, 11 and said plates being arranged in over-lapping relation and for relative sliding movement so that the length of each end wall may be extended or diminished as required by the size of the mold. Each plate 5 has a longitudinal slot 12 engaged by a clamping bolt 13 with which each plate 4 is provided each clamping bolt having a washer 14 which bears on the outer side of the plate 5 and being also provided with a wing or thumb nut 15. Hence the plates 4, 5 may be clamped together and secured at any desired adjustment of the side walls as will be understood. Each plate 9 of each end wall has a similar slot 16 engaged by a bolt 17 with which the companion plate 8 is provided, each of said bolts having a washerv 1S and a clamping or thumb nut 19. Hence the plates or members of the end Walls may also be clamped together at any desired extension or adjustment of the end Walls as will be understood.
The ends of the side and end walls of the snap flask jacket are connected together at i,the corners of said jacketvby the "universal hinges 3 each of which comprises a pair of bars 20, 2l secured on the said side and end walls or the plates thereof at points near their contiguous ends. The bar of each hinge is integral and is rigidly secured in place by rivets 22. Said bar is provided at 'its center, on its outer side, with an armA 23 which is provided with a ball 24. Each hinge bar 21 comprises a rigidly secured member 25 andan adj ustably secured member 26 the member 25 being secured on the plate' of one of the walls by rivets 27 and the member 26 being provided with adjusting slots 28 engaged by clamping bolts 29 which Ahave 'washers 30 and winged or thumb nuts 31. Said slots 'and clamping bolts perl mit theelmember 26 'to be adjusted toward and 'from the member '25. Said members 'are arranged 'with their opposed ends in spaced relation `and are provided at their opposed ends 'with out-'turned ears 32. Segmental socket recesses 33 are formed in said ears for the reception of the ball 24 so that a ball and socket joint is formed between the 'members of each hinge and the hinge members are thereby adapted for universal movement 'so that the side and end walls of the snap flask jacket may be arranged at rightangles to each other or at any desired angle and may be also'arranged closer together at the top or bottom than at the opposite extremity and hence the snap flask jacket may be adapted to fit a mold of any shape whether rectangular or rhomboidalv and may be also adapted to fit va mold which tapers in one direction. The ears 82 are connected together by a bolt 34 which may be adjusted Vto secure any desired grip or tension between the bolt and socket members of the hinges and to prevent lost motion. In practice the hinge members are preferably 0f malleable material.
It will be observed that owing to the provision of the arms 23 on the hinge bars 2O 'and the provision of the ears 32 on the hinge bars 21 the hinges serve to hold the ends of the side and end walls in spaced relation or open at the corners of the jacket to adapt said side and end walls to be adj usted to any desired angle, according to the shape of the mold on which 'the jacket is to be used, and to also adapt the side and end walls of the jacket to be folded compactly as shown in "We also provide extension plates 35 of suitable length for use on the inner sides of the slotted plates of the side 'and end walls or either of them, to cover the slots and extend from the unslotted plate to the outer end of the slotted plate so that any vside or end wall maybe arranged, when extended, with an unbroken inner surface tobear one side 'of the mold. In Fig. 7 of the drawings we `show a modified construction of the snap flask jacket in which the use of the extension plates and the provision of the slots in certain of the plates of the end and sidewalls of the jacket may be dispensed with. In this modified construction the inner end edges of the plates 4 or 8 are `beveled or lground 'to an edge as at 37 on the side next to the mold and the coengaging out-turnedfianges yof the plates of the side and end walls are secured together at any desired adjustment by thumb screws 38. l Y

While we have herein shown and described a preferred form of our invention we would haver it understood that changes may be' Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
l. A snap flask jacket of the class described comprising side and end walls and connections between said walls at the .corners of the jacket, said connections embodying universal joints adapting said walls for universal angular movement, to Vfenablethe jacket to be folded and to be also used on molds of various shapes, said side and end walls being longitudinally eXtensible and each comprisinga pair of plates arranged in over-lapping relation, the outer plates having slots, and bolts connecting said plates together vand 4extending through said slots, said side and end walls also comprising eX- tension plates on the inner sides of'and covering the slots of saidouter plates.
2. A snap flask jacket of the class de-l scribed comprising side and end walls and hinges forming connections between said `side and end walls at the corners ofthe jacket, each hinge comprising "a pair of bar members one having an arm provided with a ball and the other having a socket in which the ball is mounted for universal angular movement, said arms causing the hinge fwith'a 'bali` andthe ether having a so'cket ITW in which the ball is mounted for universal angular movement, said arms causing the hinge members to hold tlie side and end Walls in spaced relation at the ends of said side Walls and corners of the jacket, each socket bar comprising a pair of members adapted for relative adjustment and provided With means to adjust and secure said members and thereby enable any desired tension to be secured at the ball and socket 10 joint.
