To all whom z' may concern Be it known vthat I, SAMUEL TOLLEY, a citizen.A of the United States, residing at Abingdon,1inthe county of'Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Pole `or Tongue `Cap for Neck-Yoke Connections; and I do hereby declare' the following to be a full7 clear, and exact descriptionv of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Specification of Letters` Patent.
This invention relates te an improved: tongue or pole cap, and one of the objects ofthe invention kis to providel a simple, efficient Aand practical devicel of this` kind comprising improved features of construction. e Y v A further object of the invention isthe provision of a pole cap havingimproved means for detachably connecting a neck yoke thereto. A further object of the invention is the provision ofa pole capI having a forwardlyV extending prong or tongue terminating' in a` hook, and provided with an elongated cavity in its under portion, in which a latch (which 1s spring tensioned) is pivotally mounted, the spring acting to throw the latch in contact with the hook, thereby retaining the usual loop (not shown) of a neck yoke (not shown) in engagement with said pole cap*l A further object of the invention is the provision of a latch having a spring connection and ypivotally mounted in said cavity, whereby said spring may hold the latch open, or in contact with said hook.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means on the body of the latch to be engaged by the loop of ther` neck yoke (not shown) when said yoke is being moved ofi the cap, for closing the latch in contact with the hook.
In practicalfelds the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling Within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a portiony of a wagon pole, which is provided witha reduced extension end 2, to which the pole cap 3 (which is provided with a hollow portion 4) is fitted,
there being bolts 5 passing through the end extension and the wall of the hollow part 11, which is disposed transversely of thel cavity adjacent where the elongated portion thereof merges into the enlarged part 9, is a latch 1Q. The latch 12 is in the form of a bell crank lever, and its longer arm 18 has its extremity curved at 14, to engage the hook 7,- as shown in Fig. 1, in order to retain a loop of a neck yoke (not shown) on the pole cap. A contracting tension spring 15 has one end connected at 16 to the shorter arm of the bell crank latch while its other end is connected at 17 to the inner wall of the enlarged portion 9 of said cavity. By the contraction of said spring 15 the free end curved part 14 of the latch normally engages said hook 7, while the extrcmity of the shorter arm 18 normally en- Gages the recess 10. When the latch is c osed as shown in Fig. 1, said shorter arm 18 is so embedded in the under part of the cap as to avoid any obstructions tc the loop of the neck yoke when slipping on the cap. When the loop of the neck yoke slips over the cap, it contacts with the longer arm of the latch, and automatically opens, and after the loop passes the longer arm of the latch, the latch` consequently returns toits normal position {through threat-.tion of the spring.
In Figs. 5 and l the cavity of the pole cap comprises the elongated portion 19 and the enlarged portion 20, andthe latch consists of a circular disk Qlpivotedupon the pin 2:2
