To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY G. SOHM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connell, in the county of Franklin, State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved washing machine, and one of the objects of the invention isto improve, simplify and render more etficient and practical, the washing machine particularly its agitator, set forth, illustrated and claimed in the Patent Number 1,199,125, issued to Henry G. Sohm, September 26, 1916.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved agitator, pivoted in the cover of the washing machine receptacle, whereby the agitator may oscillate freely in the interior of the receptacle.

A further object of the invention is the provision of improved means for oscillating the agitator.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an agitator having arm's p'iv-r oted in the cover of the machine and provided with a body at the lower ends of the arm having agitating fingers.

A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the cylindrical body of the agitator may rock relative to and independently of the arms, whereby the agitating fingers may move independently of the arms, so that the arms may gain a start on each return stroke of the arms.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a Washing machine receptacle having its inner wall provided with transverse ribs, thereby providing an improved rub surface.

In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved washing machine, constructed in accordance with invention.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a clothes receiving receptacle of the washing machine. This receptacle comprises the side pieces 2, to the end and bottom edges of which, a piece of galvanized sheet metal 3 is secured, as shown at 4, to provide ends-5 and a bottom 6 for the receptacle. This receptacle is supported upon the longitudinal pieces or bars 7 the ends of which are secured at 8 to the legs 9, which, at 10, are in turn secured to the side pieces 20f the receptacle. Bars 11 are arranged transversely and are secured at 12 to the legs 9, thereby additionally reinforcing the legs. Secured in any suitable manner to the inner surfaces of the ends and the bottom of the receptacle, are transverse strips 13, arranged at spaced intervals, thereby providing a rub surface for the clothes.

The end portions of the strips 13 are connected by means of intermediate pieces 14:, which act to reinforce or strengthen the transverse strips, and also constitute additional means against which the clothes may rub. The washing machine receptacle has a clothes receiving opening 15 in its upper part for the reception of the closure 16. The ends of the opening 15 are provided with rabbets or recesses 17, to be engaged by the correspondingly shaped portions at the ends of the closure. The closure is hinged, as at 18, to the receptacle, and by means of the pivoted latches 19, the closure is held in its 9 opening, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 clearly. The closure 16, near its side edges, is provided with openings 20, in which, and on the pins 21, the arms 22 of the U-shaped member 23 of the clothes and suds agitating member are pivoted. The upper ends of the arms 22 have pivoted thereto, as at 24, the ends of the arms 25 of the U-member 26, the transverse portion 27 of which is rockably mounted in the head 28 of the T-shapcd lever 29. The lower end of the lever 29 is hingedly connected, as at 30, to the transverse bar 31, which connects two of the legs 9. When the T-shaped lever is oscillated, the arms 22 are rocked upon their pivot pins 21, which will oscillate the agitator proper on the interior of the receptacle. The agitator proper comprises a cylindrical body 32, which has a longitudinally extending opening 33. This body 32 may be any suitable shape, and fixed into the body in any suitable manner and extending from the body are agitating fingers 34a These fingers may extend from the body in any suitable manner, some, preferably downwardly, and others, downwardly and laterally, and in staggered relation, to insure the necessary agitation of the clothes and the suds. The opening 33 may .be any suitable shape in cross section, preferably as shown in Fig. 2, so as to permit the body 32 to rock slightly on the trans verse part 35 (which is preferably square in cross section, and is extended through the opening 33) of the U-shaped member 23, as the arms 22 are oscillated. By this construction, the agitator proper is allowed to move or flex slightly independently of the U-shaped member 23, so that said member at the end of each of its strokes is allowed to gain a start on its return stroke, thereby preventing the agitating fingers from agitating the clothes too severely, thereby avoidmg excessive wear.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a machine as set forth, a receptacle to receive that which is to be agitated, the interior of the receptacle having a rub surface, a U-shaped member having its transverse portion in the receptacle and its arms pivoted in the top of the receptacle, means connected to the upper part of the arms to oscillate said Ushaped member, the transverse portion of said member being'rectangular in cross section, a cylindrical agitator body provided with a longitudinal opening segment shaped in cross section and through which the rectangular transverse part of the U-shaped member extends, the smaller part of the segment engaging the upper part of the rectangular transverse portion, whereby the agitator body may rock on said rectangular transverse portion, and agitator fingers extending radially from the cylindrical body. p

An agitator comprising a U-shaped member having its transverse portion providcd with longitudinal flat sides parallel with each other in cross section and consti- I tuting a bearing, an agitator body proper provided with a bore extending longitudinally of said body and being segment shaped in cross section, and through which said transverse part of the U-shaped member extends, whereby said cylindrical body is permitted to have a lost movement at each end of the stroke of the agitator.
