EDWIN JOSETEI-I SHAUT, 0F CANISTEO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 TOM. S, PAGE AND BYRON FBISBEE, BOTH OF HORNELL, NEW YORK- T.,253,4i34, ge
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. SHAUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canisteo, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antisetting Devices for Hens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for preventing hens from setting, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to surround the leg of the hen at the joint, in such a manner that the joint will be prevented from bending and it will be impossible for the hen to set.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be easily and quickly applied to the hens leg, and which is adjustable so that its size may be varied to conform to the hens leg to which it is applied.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient in operation.
WVith these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my antisetting device applied to a chickens e;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device with the various elements spread out.
In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in Fig. 1 of which I have illustrated my anti-setting device applied to a hens leg. It will be understood that when this device is in position along the front of the leg, it will be impossible for the leg to bend and for the hen to set.
The device is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal including a trans ANTISETTING DEVICE FOR HEN'S.

versely curved strip 1 which is adapted to be positioned on the front of the hens leg at the joint, and to project above and below said joint. This strip has its opposite ends 2 and 3 outwardly flared so that when securely held against the leg of the hen, there will be no likelihood of the sharp edges injuring the fowl, should attempt be made to bend the leg.
Projecting laterally from the side edge 4t of the strip 1, at a point centrally between the opposite ends of the same is a pliable band 5 which is slit longitudinally as shown at 6 and which has its adjacent side portions 7 and 8 outwardly bowed. This band 5 is adapted to surround the leg of the hen at the joint, and the joint will project through the bowed portions 7 and 8 of the band as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The free end of the band 5 is provided with a lock tongue 9 which operates in a manner to' be hereinafter more fully described.
Projecting from the opposite side 10 of the strip 1 is a centrally disposed lateral extension 11 which is adapted to be disposed against the adjacent side of the leg of the hen when the device is in position, and which is provided contiguous to its extremity with a plurality of spaced transversely extending slots 12. To give the desired amount of flexibility to the extension 11 the same is slit longitudinally as shown at 13 so that it may be readily moved to the position above described.
In operation, when it is desired to place this device on the leg of the hen, the strip 1 is positioned on the front portion of the same at the joint in such a manner that it will project above and below the same. The pliable band 5 is then swung around the limb at the joint, and the bowed portions 7 and 8 of this band will be positioned above and below the joint which will project therethrough. The extension 11 is then moved to position against the adjacent side of the leg, and the lock tongue 9 is moved through one of the openings 12 therein and bent to lock the device securely in position. The slot or opening 12 through which the tongue 9 is positioned, is varied according to the size of the leg that the band surrounds. By this adjustment the device may be made to fit various sizes of hens legs.
Uwing to the fact that the strip 1 is ab solutely rigid when the device is in position, it will be impossible for the hen to bend the legat the joint, consequently preventing the fowl from setting. Also as the opposite ends of the strip 1 are outwardly flared, there will be no possibility of the fowl becoming injured should it endeavor to bend its leg when the device is in posi' tion. The means employed to secure the strip in position allow a certain amount of flexibility, but will prevent the leg from bonding to any appreciable extent. The device may be easily and simply applied or removed, as it is only necessary to bend the pliable band and extension in position around the leg and to seeurelylockthe parts together.
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my improved device, the manner of applying the same to use, and the operation thereof .will be readily understood, and it will be seen that I liave provided a simple and eflieient device of this character for carrying out the objects of the invention.
I claim:
A device for preventing hens from setting formed from a single piece of sheet metal including a rigid transversely curved strip adapted to engage the front of a hens leg at the joint and to project above and below said joint, the opposite ends of said strip being outwardly flared, a band projecting from the center of one side edge of the strip and integral therewith andadapted to surround said joint, said band having a longitudinally extending slot therein with its adjacent sideportions bowed outwardly to allow the joint to project therebetween, an integral longitudinally slottedextension on the opposite side edge of the strip dis posed in a plane with the band and adapted to be positioned against the adjacent side of said joint, said extension having a plurality of spaced transverse slots therethrough, and a tongue on the free end of the band adapted to be positionedthrough one-of saidslots whereby the band may be locked in various adjusted positionsv to conform to the size of the hens leg.
In testii'i'iony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the witnesses.
