HARRY J". HIGH, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MCCASKEY REGISTER COM.; PANY, (INCORPORATED IN 1914,) OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
HINGE FOR FILING-APPLIANCE CASES.
Application lerl August 5, 1914.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.'
.i Be it known that I, Hanny J. HICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and `State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Filing- Appliance Cases, of which the following is a specification. Y
The invention relates to a case for a filing appliance, which may include a series of hinged holders operatively mounted therein and adapted to be completely inclosed by the case for protection against tire and like damage.
The invention contemplates the use of a rectangular case composed of a lower or base section and an upper or cover section, with guidinghinge connections between the sec tions, so that the upper' section can be closed downward upon the base section to completely incase the bill holders mounted therein, or can be swung upward with its rear end resting upon the rear portion of the base section to form a back or support for the bill holders in operative position. Y
In a former application, tiled June l, 1914,
Serial No. 841,976, a filing appliance of this type or characterI has been illustrated, described and claimed, in which similar base and cover sections are provided with intermeshing tongues and grooves upon the side and forward rims and rabbets upon the rear rims, and with guiding hinge connections between their rear ends for swinging and shifting the cover sections upon the base sections, so that when closed the rear ends will be in alinement, and when open, the top of the cover section will be alined with the rear end of the base section.
And in a subsequent application tiled July 27, 1914;, Serial No. 858,254, a modified form of filing appliance case is illustrated, described and claimed, in which similar base and cover sections are provided with intermeshing tongues and grooves upon the rear rim as well as the side and forward rims, together with improved guiding hinge connections between the case sections for causing a clearance of the tongues and grooves on the rear rims during the operation of thc cover section upon the base section.
The object of the present improvement is to provide a simple construction and arrangement of the guiding hinge connections, which will permit the use of intermeshng Specification of Letters Patent.

rabbets on all sides and ends of the case sections.
This object is attained by downwardly offA setting the rear ends of the horizontal guide ways in the hinge connections so that the rear rims will be cammed and clamped together thereby. A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying dra-wings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved iiling appliance case with the cover section closed upon the base section, showing the improved guiding hinge connection, partly in section to expose details of construction; and
Fig. 2, a section of the case, showing the cover section swung into upright position upon the base section, with a series of bill holders mounted therein, the case sections being provided with rabbeted rims.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The case is composed of the substantially similar rectangular bottom or base section 1 and the top or cover section 2, which are operatively connected together by means of the guiding hinge brackets 3, one being located on each side of the rear end portion of the case.
rhe guiding hinge brackets 3 are secured by the depending tianges 13 thereon to the sides of the base section at the rear end thereof, as by means of the bolts 1t; the upper ends of which securing flanges are offset to form the horizontal tracks 15 substantially in the same plane with the side rims of the base section. The ends of each track l5 are curved first upward and then inward a short distance above and parallel with the track to form the horizontal guide 16 located above the track, thereby forming the straight horizontal way 17 between the track and the guide.
The vertical guide flanges 18 are provided in the upper portion of each bracket above the middle portion of the horizontal way, between which guides is formed the straight vertical way 19. The sliding pivot posts 20 are provided on the lower rear side corners of the cover section of the case, and as shown may be in the form of rollers journaled thereto, which rollers are adapted to travel in the horizontal ways upon the horizontal tracks of the brackets; and the sliding pivot rollers 21 are journaled on the sides of the cover section substantially equidistant from the upper and rear edges thereof, which rollers are adapted to travel in the vertical ways between the vertical guides of the brackets.
By these connections it is evident that the.
cover section of the case may be swung `and completely shifted upon the base section thereof so that when the coverscction is in upright position, its top wall will aline with the rear wall ofthe base section.- AFor Ythe purpose of the present invention the rear ends of the horizontal tracks 15 and guides 16 are downwardly offset, thus likewise downwardly otsetting therear ends of the horizontal ways 17; and it is evident that when the pivotal rollers Q0 ride rearward to ward and vinto the rear ends oi' these ways, during the final lclosing movement of the cover section upon the base section, theiear rim ot' the cover section will becammed and clamped downward upon the rear rim of the base section, thereby securely sealing the joint formed thereby.
I claim:
1. A filing case including similar .base and cover sections with guiding hinge connections betweenthe rear ends for swinging and completely shifting the cover section upon the base section, and cam devices in the hinge. connections for drawing and clamping the rear rims together.
2. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge ,connecy tions between the rear ends for swinging andshifting thecover section upon the base sec tion, the guiding hinge connections having horizontal guide-ways with downwardly olii set rear ends on the base section and pivotsv on the cover section operating in the guideways for clamping the rear rims together during the final closing movement only ot the case sections.
3. A filing Vappliance including a case composed of a base section having side bot tom and rear walls and a cover section having side top andl rear walls, and guiding hinge connections between the rearends of the sections for swinging and shifting the cover section upon the base section with the rear wall of the cover section in alinement with the rear wallof the. base sectiomsai'd connections comprising brackets-on tlieb'ase section having straightfh'orizontal andw-ertical ways and .pivots on, the-,cover section op?. erating in the.ways, the pivotsoperating in the vertical ways Y beingy spaced .substantially equidistaiit from* thettop and rear, walls of the cover section.
4. A tilingl appliancenncluding a case composed of a base sectionfhaving sidebottom and rear walls v`and the. cover section having sidetop and .rear walls, :and guiding hinge connections between ,tlierearvends/ot the sections for swinging and shifting the,
cover section uponitheibase section lwithfthe rear wallvof ,the coversectionin aliiiement with the rear wallofthe base, section, said` connections comprising brackets on the base section having straight ,-liorizontal Iand vertical ways and pivots on the cover. section ops erating in thegways, ithe pivots operating. inV
the vertical ways being spaced substantially equidistantrom vthe top and, rfearwalls ot` the cover section and thereV being cam def` vices at theyends of the horizontal .ways .for drawing andelamping the: rear rims together.
