Description

C. SCHULC. Improvement ih fi'e'vices'for Removing Obstacles from the Throats of Cattle. I No 125 337 PatentedApril2,'f872.
16077265565. L ma/z! f UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN SOHULO, OF NORTH EAST, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO MICHAEL WEBER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR REMOVING OBSTACLES FROM THE THROATS 0F CATTLE.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,337, dated April 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SGHULO, of North East, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Device for Removing ObstructingMatter from theThroats of Cattle, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, the same forming a part of this specification.
The object of my device is to remove obstructions from the, throats of cattle, such as apples, potatoes, &c., which may lodge there during the process of feeding. My device is also intended to be used to open a passage for wind from the stomachs of cattle when they are sulfering from wind-colic and the like.
The following is an exact description of my invention. It is shown in the accompanying drawing, as follows:
Figure l is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
The following is a description of the several parts, and of their construction and operation.
A is a mouth-piece, which is placed in the animals mouth; and O O are straps, which buckle around the head and hold the mouthpiece in place. This mouth-piece is provided with a hole, through which passes the hollow flexible pipe I5, which is constructed of rubber hose or any flexible material, and is of any length desired, say four or five feet. Each end is provided with a metallic tip D D which are also hollow, to correspond with the hose B. The tip D has its corners rounded so as to present a smooth surface. Within this tube operates a small hollow rod, E, at one end of which attaches a handle and at the other a spear, G. F is a gauge-pin. This constitutes the construction of my device.
It is used as follows: When a cow is found to have lodged some obstacle in her throat I insert the flexible tube in the throat, first placing the mouth-piece A in the. mouth and buckling the straps back of the horns. I push the tube down, the tip D going foremost, until the obstruction is reached. The tube being flexible, and the tip D having a smooth surface, no injury can be done to the throat. After having reached the obstacle I push gently on the tube, and, if possible, shove the obstacle ondown to the stomach; but, if this cannot be done safely, I place the gauge-pin F in the rod E an inch or so from the tip D, and then drive the rod E down. This throws the spear G out from its concealed position within the tip D and it enters the apple or whatever the obstruction may be. I then draw out the tube B, or rather the whole device, and with it the obstruction on the end of the spear.
The use of my instrument incases of windcolic, &c., is as follows: The spear G is removed from the rod E. The instrument is inserted until it reaches the stomach, and the small rod is used to remove any obstruction that may have formed on the end of the tip D, and it is then removed, and the air from the stomach flows through the tube, and immediate relief is obtained.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: i
The rod E with the spear G, in combination with the tube B and mouth-piece A, when the same are arranged and constructed as and for the purposes set forth.
CHRISTIAN SGHULG.
