DEVICE FOR REMOVING OBSTACLES FROM THE THROATS 0F CATTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 14, 1910.
Application filed January 13, 1910. Serial No. 537,810.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY H. KOHNE,
,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Coupeville, in the county of Island and State of Washington, have invented a new and ImprovedDevice forRemoving Obstacles from the Throats of Cattle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to devices for removing from the throats of cattle or horses, any obstruction, such as a potato or apple, which has lodged and causes the animal to choke.. To accomplish this operation the invention is designed to force out the obstacle by a stripping action, to which end it is provided with stripping jaws constructed to compress the esophagus from the outside at successive points and in this way enforce the obstacle to travel in the gullet back to the mouth, the jaws being adjustable to and from each other and having slightly concaved opposed sides or edges to assist in guiding the device along both sides of the esophagus.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, illustrating the application of my invention as applied to a cow, in removing an obstruction from the throat; Fig. 2 is a plan of the device; and Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the preferred construction of the instrument I provide two arms 5, 5, which are adjustably connected together at one end to swing to and from each other, by a pivot pin or stud 6, the pin being connected to or otherwise prevented from passing through one of the arms and threaded at its opposite end to receive thumb-nut 7, adapted to bear on the opposite arm and secure the arms together in any position of adjustment, the arms being preferably knurled on their opposed faces around the pivot pin to prevent the arms from slipping on each other when the thumb nut is tightened. The arms are curved toward each other so that their free ends face each other and provide opposed stripping jaws 8, for engaging the throat of the animal exteriorly at opposite sides, as illustrated in Fig. 1. For this purpose each jaw is constructed with a gripping face or edge 9, of slight concavity, to assist in guiding the device along both sides of the esophagus, the concavity being insufficient to permit of the device slipping past the obstruction. Each arm 5 intermediate its length is provided with a hand slot 12, shown to conform to the curvature of the arm, and through which the instrument is grasped in use.
In operation, the instrument is placed against the opposite sides of the throat of the animal just below the obstacle, and the jaws loosened and firmly pressed to the throat, when they are tightened. The operator then draws the instrument upwardly along the esophagus, compressing the walls thereof at successive points and forcing the obstacle toward the month, where it is removed. It is usually necessary to use a nose ring to prevent the animal from frantically swinging its head when the instrument is in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device for removing obstacles from the throats of cattle, etc., stripping jaws relatively arranged to engage eXteriorly at the opposite sides of the animalsthroat and compress the esophagus at successive points to force out the obstruction when the jaws are drawn over the throat, and a connection between the jaws, on which one of the jaws is adjustable to and from the other.
2. In a device for removing obstacles from the throats of cattle, etc., stripping jaws relatively arranged to engage exteriorly at the opposite sides of the animals throat and compress the esophagus at successive points to force out the obstruction when the jaws are drawn over the throat, each jaw having a concave stripping face.
3. In a device for removing obstructions from the throats of cattle, etc., arms pivotally connected together having opposed stripping jaws constructed to engage exteriorly at the opposite sides of the animals throat and compress the esophagus at successive points to force out the obstruction, and means to lock the arms together in their several positions of adjustment.
4:. In a device for removing obstructions from the throats of cattle, arms pivoted name to this specification in the presence of together halving opposed strippinig jaws, two subscribing witnesses. each arm avin a s 0t interme late its length for the i nsertion of the hand in ANTHONY KOHNE' 5 drawing the device over the animals throat, Witnesses:
to force out the obstruction. A. N. CoRBIN, In testimony whereof I have signed my S. H. OORBIN.
