To all whom z5 may concern.' y
Be it known that "l, WILLIAM A.LSM1TH, a lcitizen or" the United States, residingat Deliver', in the county of Denver and State oi' Colorado, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolly Mechanism ttor Drill-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification. M n
`The present invent-ion relates more particularly to the dolly mechanism of drill sharpening apparatus.
One of the objectsis to provide al dolly holder or support of practical, novel and simple character which will permit the ready removal and replacement ofthe dolly,
Asis well known `to those skilled in this art, drill bits are now almost universally provided with a longitudinal bore therethrough for the purpose of directing cleansing iiuid to the bottom of the drill hole, and as a consequence, inthe sharpeningoperation means are necessaryto keep the bore at the ibitend of the drill in properly 'open condition. rlfhe practice therefore is to employ a projection on the dolly which enters thebore. vThese projections being relatively small in cross section, soon become burned, worn and misshapen. `An important object therefore is to providea dolly with a` removable pin for this purpose, the same being readily detachable, `and means being employed, whereby it is properly held `inoperative position whenin use.
An embodiment of the inventionis "illus,-`
trated in the ,accompanying drawings,
wherein j ,l y n Figure '1 is a view partially in elevation and partially in section of a portion of a drill sharpening apparatus, illustrating the improved dolly and dolly holding means.
F ig. 2 is a plan view ofthe dollying ham mer Y with the associated (parts.
Fig. ais acfosssectionai view' da the line Adisclose or describe in detail.
and is suitably held upon the head 12, the
section vla abutting .against the `collar. ,15. These two sections are held in assembled relationv bytransverse tiebolts 1.6 pivoted at their lower ends, as shown at 17 to ears.18
formed upon the lowersection13. The. tie
bolts'passthrough slots 19 formed inears 20 that` project from opposite sides` of the upper section 14.-. Suitable nuts 21 are threaded uponl the upper ends of the bolts and` bear upon the upper sides of the ears 20, thereby i eiiectively holding the two sections together. At the same time, it will be evident that these sections are easily separated byloosening the nuts 21 until the bolts 16 can beswung outwardly or disengaged fromthe upper section, whereupon said upper section can be detachedfrom the lower section. Y
The dolly holder is provided with adongitudinal bore 22 formed partly in each-section, andin this boreis slidablyllocated a .dolly, the same consisting of a `shank 23that is'locate'd in the bore, and an `integralhead 24 disposed in advance of the holder.` .T he rear end of the dollyhasadepending lug 25 that is :abutted against bya suitable return piston 26 mounted in thelower section 13. Soiar as thus described, the dolly and the return means isa known structure. ,j j
In the present embodiment, it will be noted that said dolly is provided with a longitudinal bore having a iront portion 27 ot less diameter than the rear portion 28, thereby producing an internal shoulder 29. ln said front portion 27 is detachably iitted a dolly pin 30 having a pointed front end 31 that projects from the head 24, and having a rear head 32 that is iitted in the portion 28 of larger diameter, said head abutting against the shoulder 29. ln rear of the head 32 and bearing against the same is a tappetpin 33 that is located in the portion 28 of the dollyl pin is effectively held in placeV and that when the hammer piston ll strikes the rear end vof the dolly, it also strikes the tappet pin 33, and thus maintains the projecting end 3l in operative position. When the pin 30 becomes worn or useless from any cause, it is only necessary to separate the sections of the holder, which as already eX- rplained, can be easily accomplished, remove the dolly and hold it in upright position,
whereupon the tapept pin 33 will drop out and the dolly pin 30 can be easily removed, a new pin can then be placed in position, and the tappet pin replaced.
From the foregoing, it' is thought that the construction, Voperation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without de# parting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
` Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a hammer including a barrel and a piston operating therein, of a dolly holder at one end of the hammer comprising separable sections, one of which is mounted on the barrel, means for securing the sections together, and a dolly mounted between the sections and removable when they are separated.
2. In apparatus of the character set forth,
' the combination with a hammer including a barrel and a piston operating therein, of a Vdolly holder at one end of the hammer comprising separable longitudinal sections, one of which is provided with a collar that surrounds the barrel, transverse mcansvsecuring the sections together, and a dollyV mounted between the sections and removable when they are separated. 3. In apparatus of the character set forth,
^ the combination with a hammer including Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents eah, byaddressing the `ucmmigsimm-af Patents.
l I Washington, D. c n f l v l a barrel having a piston operating therein, of a dolly holder at one end of the hammer comprising separable sections, ,one of which is mountedon thebarrel, means for securing the sections together, a dolly mounted between the sections and removable when said sections are separated, and means for returning rthe dolly against the actionof the hammer, said means being mounted on one of the sections.
Ll. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a dolly support, of a dolly thereinrhaving a longitudinal bore, a.V Y Y removable dolly pin located inthe bore and projecting from the front end of the. dolly but terminating short of its rear end, and a tappet located in the bore `in rear of the dolly pin.
5. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a dolly support, of a dolly therein provided with alongitudinal `bore having, portions of different diameters, a removable dolly pin'located in a portion of the bore of one diameter and projecting from the front end of the dolly but terminating short of its rear'end, and a tappet located in theportionof the bore of dilierent diameter and disposed in rear of ,the dolly. pin. 'l
6. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a dolly support, of a dolly therein having a head and a shank and provided with alongitudinal bore, the front portion of said` bore being Vof less `diameter than the rear portion, forming an internal shoulder, a dolly pin having a shank located in the portion lof less diameter and projectingbeyond the front end of the dolly, said `dolly pin also having a head located in the portion'of the bore oflarger diameter and associatedwiththe internal shoulder, and a tappet pin disposed in the portion of the bore of larger diameter and having its front end -arranged against the head of the dolly 1n.- y Y P In testimony whereof, I aliix mysignan ture inthe `presence .of two witnesses.
