Be'it known that LVVALTER E. HosCn, a citizen of the United States, residing in ,the city of'St. Louis and State Of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Winding-Drums, of which-the following is Thisinvention relates to a windingdevice or drum about which a cord, ribbon or web of any kind may be wound. Although the invention maybe used for various purposes,
lace Or other articles in the form of a web. The present specificationis a division of my application, Serial No. 6671, filed February 8, 1915, for a ribbon measurin cost computing and winding machine. en applied to such a'inachine the drum facilitates the running off of the ribbon from the supply readily removed from the drum.
produce a drum for this having a very simple construction which will facilitate the winding off of a web or ribbon to form a roll on the drum,-and enabling this when desired. p In the drawing which illustrates the pre- 'ferred embodiment of my invention,
1 indicates the housing of a winding and above.
Figure 1 is a plan partially shown in sec; tion of a machine of the type to which I refer, and illustrating my drumapplied to it,
Fig. 2 is an end elevationofthis machine,
'Fig. '3 shows the appearance of a cross section taken through the drum, and
Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section at the free end of the drum. 7
1 Referring more particularly to the parts,
machine of'the type referred to his housing is extended on one side so as to form a trough or cradle 2 adapted to receive a bolt or supply roll indicated by the dotted line 3, ofany material such as measuring 3 is drawn through of this machine the web from the supply roll a throat 4 and between rollers 5 and 6 inthis throat, which cooperateyith a measuring mechanism to measure lengths of ribbon,
the free end of the drum. The general object of the invention is to general. purpose I edges orplaces onthe drum wrapped the length of web which passes through the i throat.
On the side of the cradle 2 my drum 7 is located. Ipreferto rotatably support this drum 7 by securing it to a stub shaft 8 which is rbtatably'mounted in a bearing 13 in an extension of the housing 1. -1 The stub shaft 8 may be rotated in any desired manner, for example, by means of a large gear 9 which drives a pin- Patented Jan. 15,1918. 1
machine opposite to the ion 10, the large gear being rotatedwhcn dethe bearing 13. The
have illustrated them as formed integrally,
that is, as cut from a'tubular shell by longitudinal slotsflavhich form the gaps 15. In either case they'are held by the head 13 rigidly againstdateral movement only: The material out. 6
spring steel or brass,
cutting ,t which these fingers are" formed is preferably resilient metal such asturn inwardly slightly,
also these fingers are curved in a transverse direction so that circumference\ of (see Fig. 3).
they form sections of the the cylindrical drum wall By reason of the convex form erate to produce a substantially cylindrical wall for the drum, thereby avoidin any that woul bend the ribbon about an angle and crease itwhen pen the drum. This is most desirable wh re thedevice is used for winding off delicate laces or ribbons.
While I do not limit myself to the specific Of the outersides of the fingers 14 they opdrum sections 14 are compressed, that is,
.form of drum "described, the members 14 pressed inwardly, the body portion of the drum will collapse or become reduced in diameter.
' v ters Patent 1s:
Inthe operation of the device, the end of the web is passed under one of the tonguesor fingers 14 by passing it through two adjacent gaps 15. Now when the crankll is rotated in the proper'direction the stub shaft 8 will rotate and thereby rotate the drum. When. a desired quantity of the ribbon, or the like, hasvbeen wound onto the drum to form a roll on the drum, the ribbon ma be cut-off at the slot 17. The roll of rib on or web uponthe drum may then be removed simply by compressing or squeezing'the free ends of the drum sections 14 inwardly, whereupon the roll of ribbon :may 4 be slipped longitudinally off the outer end of the drum.
In practice the drums may be constructed with the stub shaft attached, or with other means enabling them to be soldseparately for convenient attachment in the machine,
It is understood that the embodiment of the invention described herein is only one of -the many embodiments this invention may take and-i} do not wish to be limited in the practice of the invention nor in my claims to .the particular embodiment set forth.
by said head, and extending longitudinally -of the drum, about which a web may he wound to form a roll on said drum, said fingers operating to yield inwardly at their free ends when compressed to permit the roll to be slipped longitudinally off of the end of said'drum.
1 2.1a a machine of ale classhescribed, a
winding drumwrotatably' supported at one end, and having a. body portion of tubular form, said'body po'rtio'n havin a-plurality ,of longitudinally disposed s ots "formed therein dividing saidvtubular orti on circumferentially into. 'compressi le 7 sections enabling the web to be wound in a roll on said drum, and then slippedlongitudinally off 'of the; otherend of said drum by com: pressing thebody portion of said drum 3. As a new article of manufacture, a winding drum having a single head for supporting a drum at one end only, and having a substantially'tubular body composed of-a plurality of 'circumferentially disposed meni- T ers about which the web may be woundto form aroll on the drum, said members being supported by said head, and inwardly-movable at their free ends to: permit the roll to.
longitudinally-off the end Qfthe] he slipped drum.
A. In a machine of'the class described,
winding drum havinga single head rotatably supported and having a plurality of cireumferentially disposed fingers supported solely by said head, and forming a substantially tubular body about which a-web may be wound to form a roll on the drum, said.
fingers operating to permit the roll to be slipped longitudinally off of the end of the drum.
5. In a machine of the class described, v a windin drum 'rotatably supported at one end and having a plurality of circuinferenE tially disposed convex-members forming a cylindrical mu about whicha web may be;
wound to form a roll, the ends of said members being free and inwardly movable'to permit the roll to be slipped longitudinally off of the end of the drum.
In testimony whereof, I have herei'into set my hand. r
