STENGREI-IIC MACHINE.
Application filed January 6, 1923.
To all ati/olla it may concern.'
Be it yknown that I, MARC GRANDJEAN, a citizen of the Republic of France, and residing at Paris, Seine Departn'ient, Bourse du Commerce, Bue du Louvre, in the Bepublic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stenographic Machines, of which the following .is a specification.
The present invention relates to a ree holder for stenographic machines which enables the reel to be inserted and withdrawn by one hand with great facility, and it obviates all vibrations and thus ensures a perfectly silent working; the unwinding motion can also be bralred, thus siniplifying and even eliminating the guiding means which are required in the known devices.
For this purpose, the said reel holder con 2U prises two arms having notches wherein are' disposed the journals of the reel; two other arms are movable along the said arms and are urged by springs, these latter arms having notches disposed at an angle with the .first-mentioned notches and adapted to lit upon the journals and to press the same against the first-mentioned arms by means of the springs, thereby eliminating all play as well as the noise made by the journals in their supports, and further providing for. the braking which is necessary to prevent the reels from unwinding in an improper and troublesome manner.
To insert the reel, it is simply necessary to press the journals against the movable arms in order to place the journals in the notches of the stationary arms in a ready manner; to remove the journals, the movable arms are simply let down, this 'being very easily done, and especially when the said arms are connected together by a crosspiece.
The appended drawings shows by way of example a 'forni of reel holder according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section showing the device in the position for inserting the reel.
Fig. 8 is a like section, with the journals disposed in the notches.
The said reel holder comprises an axle 1 mounted upon the journals 2 adapted to turn for example in recessed screws 3 disposed in the machine frame 4, said axle being 5 entirely Serial No. 611,093.
secured to the levers 5 having in the ends thereof the longitudinal slots G. The said arms are provided at the point where they are attached to the axle 1 with thc hubs 7 wherein are formed the two notches 8 and' 9 engaging the nibs 10 disposed upon the spring strips 11 which are mounted upon the frame Ll; the notch 8 corresponds to the operative position and the notch 9 to the position of transportation wherein the lever disappears within the main frame.
The two arms 12 connected together by the cross-piece 13 are pivoted to the levers 5 by the axles 14; the springs 15 attached to the levers 5 act upon the Asaid cross-piece. The arms 12 have formed therein the transverse notches 16 situated opposite the notches 6; the ends of the said arms are bent at an angle in order to serve as guides for the insertion of the journals 17 of the reel.
Toinsert the reel, Fig. 2, the journals 17 are simply pressed against the ends of the arms 12, and when the arms come opposite the notches 16 they will rise by the action of the springs 15 and will cause the journals to bear upon the levers 5.
` By this arrangement a braking action npon the journals is provided which prevents them from jumping and thus causing noise while the machine is at work, and furthermore the paper strip will be unrolled in a regular manner when drawn out by the said spool, whereby the strip will be guided without the use of any special devices.
It will thus be observed that the insertion and removal of the reel can be effected with one hand in a ready manner.
The invention comprises the application 0f the hereinbefore described reel holder or like support to all classes of stenographic machines.
Claims:
1. In a supporting device for the bobbin of a stenograpliic machine, the combination with a bobbin shaft, of two arms swingable about a common axis, each arm having a longitudinally extending notch to engage said shaft, and a lever pivoted to each arm and having a transversely extending notch formed therein to engage the shaft while the latter occupies the notches of said arms.
2. In a supporting device for the bobbin of aI stenographic machine, the combination with f1 bOlObin shaft, of two arms svi'ingacting upon the said alnis to cuusethe seine to exercise e braking eiiect upon the shaft of the bobbin.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my naine.
MARC GRANDJEAN.
