COMBINED SQUARE AND BEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 8, 1918.
Application filed March 12, 1917. Serial No. 154,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. GoLnrNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tenafly, in the county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Squares and Bevels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in measuring instruments and has particular reference to a combined square and bevel.
An object of the invention is to provide an instrument particularly adapted for use in roof framing and stair building and which may be quickly adjusted and conveniently carried.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the present invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the instrument constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the pivot nut member for the square and bevel.
The accompanying drawing illustrates what is now believed to be a preferred form of the invention which comprises a body portion 5 consisting of a pair of spaced elongated bars 6 and 7 held in spaced relation and reinforced by a block 8 intermediate the ends of said bars.
The square 9 including the arms 10 and 11. having suitable graduations thereon, is
ivotally and slidablv associated with the iiody portion 5, and for this purpose, one end of the bar 6 of said body portion is preferably provided with a circular opening 12 having an annular shoulder 13 upon which is seated the flange 14: of a pivot nut member 15 in the form of a block, the main portion of which is of the same thickness as the said bar 6. The arm 11 of the square is mounted between the bars 6 and 7 and is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending slot 16 which slidably receives therein the extension 17 formed upon the inner end of the member 15, said extension preferably being rectangular in formation and of a length less than the diameter of the member 15 so as to provide a continuous bearing surface around said extension adapted to engage with the adjacent surface of the arm 11. The pivot nut member 15 is retained in position by means of a thumb screw 18. The inner surface of the bar 7 of the body 5 adjacent the under side of the arm 11 of the square is provided with a recess 20 of a depth greater than the length of the extension 17 and adapted to receive the same. It will be apparent from the foregoing description that as the square 9 is rotated to make an adjustment the pivot nut member 15 will also be rotated relative to the body 5 owing to the mounting of the extension 17 in the slot 16 of the arm 11. The outer surface of the member 15 is provided with an arrow or pointer 21 which cooperates with the degree .lines 22 formed upon the adjacent surface and end of the bar 6 of the body 5 and is used in securing certain adjustments. For the purpose of securing other adjustments, the screw 18 has pivotally mounted thereon, between the member 15 and a wing nut 19, a bevel arm 23 the longitudinal edges of which also cooperate with the degree lines 22 and by loosening said wing nut it will be apparent that this arm may be swung to adjusted positions, after which the wing nut 19 is again tightened and this arm securely maintained in its proper positions independent of the square 9. The wing nut and bevel arm may be. disconnected entirely if desired. By loosening said thumb screw it will be apparent that said square 9 may be swung and adjusted to positions, after which the thumb screw 18 is again tightened and the parts securely maintained in their proper positions.
W'hat is claimed is:
An instrument of the class described, comprising a body portion consisting of spaced sion, and a bevel arm pivotally associated bars, one of Which is provided'with an open- With said pivot member. 10
