Description

A. RUSSO.
SWIMMING DEVICE.
APPLICATION man SEPT.6.19H

ANDREW RUSSO, 0F FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
SWIMMING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 8, 1918.
Application filed September 6, 1917. Serial No. 189,945.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW Russo, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at F itchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have'invented a new and useful Swimming Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a swimming device adapted to be secured to the leg of the wearer.
It is the general object of my invention to provide a device of this character by the use of which the swimmers efforts may be rendered more effective, thus enabling him to attain greater speed with less muscular effort.
To the attainment of this object, I provide a thrust member preferably formed of two converging plates, and I also provide means for firmly securing the thrust member in position on the leg of the wearer.
My invention further relates to certain constructions and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings, in which-.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in position for use, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view taken along the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, my invention comprises a thrustmember 10 preferably formed of two flat pieces of wood 11 and 12 firmly united in converging relation as shown in Fig. 2. I do not wish to be limited to any particular angular relation between the plate 11 and 12, but I have found the acute angle shown in the drawings to be suitable under the usual conditions.
The thrust member 10 is firmly secured to a legging section 13 by spacing blocks 14. The legging section 13 is shaped to fit the leg of the wearer and may be provided with eyelets 16, hooks 17, and a lacing 18 for fastening the device in position. I have also provided a strap 19 connected by strips 20 to the part 13, the strap being positioned to encircle the wearers leg above the calf and thus prevent longitudinal displacement of the swimming device.
WVith this construction it will be seen that the thrust member 10 is firmly secured in position on the back of the wearers le The increased surface of the thrust member enables him to exert a greater pressure against the water, thus increasing his rate of progress.
Having thus described my invention, it is evident that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Therefore I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim 1s 1. A swimming device comprising a thrust member having surfaces fixed relatively to each other and each extending substantially parallel to the leg of the wearer on the rear side thereof when in operative position, and means to hold said member in operative position.
2. A swimming device comprising a thrust member having flat surfaces rigidly disposed at an angle to each other and extending substantially parallel with the leg of the wearer when in operative position, and means to secure said member in operative position.
3. A swimming device comprising a pair of converging plates permanently united to form a V-shaped member, a legging section secured to said member, means to hold said legging section on the leg of the wearer with said member extending substantially parallel thereto on the rear side thereof, and a strap positioned above said legging section and adapted to prevent longitudinal displacement of the device.
4. A swimming device comprising a pair of plates rigidly disposed at an angle, a legging section, spacing blocks secured between said plates and said section, means to fasten said legging section in position on the leg of the wearer, and means to prevent longitudinal movement of the device while in use.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature.
ANDREW RUSSO.
