Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed June 16, 1917. Serial No. 175,090.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM C. VANNE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Toy; that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys and primarily a toy formed in the shape of a pistol.
My object is to provide a toy of this class for catapulting disks of card board or similar material whereby the card board will be caused to sail through the air.
A further object is to so construct the device that the operation thereof for throwing the disk will be similar to the action of a pistol in firing the same.
A further object is to so construct the parts of the toy that it can be very cheaply manufactured and at the same time rendered strong and durable.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy showing a disk mounted thereon in dotted lines. ,Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation partly in section showing the disk in position to be cast therefrom. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the operating trigger.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the body or grip portion of the toy or pistol and 2 indicates an extension or barrel portion integral therewith and it will be clearly understood that said grip portion and extension may be formed in any suitable shape or design or of any preferred material.
The extension 2 is provided with a central longitudinally extending slot 3 in which is mounted a catapulting or throwing spring 4, said spring being substantially V-shaped in general outline. the apex 5 thereof being bent around a stud 6 while one arm of the spring is preferably bent around. a stop 7 adjacent the outer end of the slot and the opposite arm thereof provided with a substantially L-shaped extension 8.
The vertical arm 9 of the extension protrudes above the upper edge of the extension 2 and is adapted to project through an openand I do hereby declare 9; tongue 11,
ing 10in a retainin I ing tongue being fiat and preferably of spring metal and having its outer end fixed to the grip portion 1 while its inner end'is slightly upwardly curved so that a disk'12 may be readily introduced thereunder. The arm of the spring 4 having the extension 8 thereon is operated to cause the arm 9 to strike the edge of the disk 12 a blow sufficient to cause the disk to sail through the air, by means of the trigger 13 which is pivoted at 14 in the slot 3, the upper end 15 of the trigger being curved forwardly so that the end of the curved portion will engage the arm of the spring 4 having the extension thereon. :If desired the end of the trigger maybe provided with a recess 16 for the reception of'the arm of the spring 4, thus holding said arm in proper alinement with the triggerat all times.
In operation the toy is grasped in the hand similar'to a'pistol and a disk 12 then introduced beneath the free end of the retaining tongue 11 and in the path of the vertical arm 9 of the extension 8 so that when the lower end of the trigger 13 is drawn rearwardly by the pressure of the finger thereon the arm of the spring 4, engaged by the upper end of the trigger, will be moved forwardly. This action will bring the arm 9 of the extension 8 against the wall of the opening 10 so that the continued movement of the trigger 13 will increase the tension on the arm of the spring 4 to such an extent that when the arm 9 is released from the opening 10, it will deliver a sudden and strong blow against the edge of the disk thus catapulting the disk forwardly and causing the same to sail through the air. Pressure is then released from the lower end of the trigger whereupon the natural spring tendency of the spring 4 will return the extension 8 to its initial position and again engage the vertical arm 9 with the opening 10, when another disk may be applied and the above operation repeated. In order to obtain the best results in the sailing of the disk, it is so introduced beneath the tongue 11 that the arm 9 will engage the disk nearer to one end thereof than to the other, thus imparting a better whirl ing motion to the disk, though it will be understood that any form or shape of disk may be used and satisfactory results obtained.
