Description

A. MARTIN. BABY SWING APPLICATION FILED AUG.6. 19!]- Pafiented Jan. 1, 1%18.
. ALBERTA MARTIN, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
BABY-EWING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERTA MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in baby swings. It is designed to provide a swing which will be very convenient and comfortable for the baby to sit in and which may be folded into very compact form when not in use, for the purposes of storage and transmission by mail or express.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and forming a part of this application Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved baby swing, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional View, of same, portions of the suspending straps being broken away.
The same reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures.
In the construction of my improved swing I provide a rectangular frame made of a single piece of wire having its ends joined at some point by a sleeve 1 or in any other convenient manner and having sides 2, front 3 and back 4. The seat of the swing is attached to the frame and is preferably made of canvas or other flexible material. It consists of a middle piece 5 attached to sides 2 of the frame, and a back piece 5 which is secured at the bottom and sides to said middle piece and extends up and around the back 4: of said frame, and thence extends down and is fastened to the frame by sewing or otherwise securing the overlapping parts together .below the frame, said back piece being then extended upwardly terminating above the frame in a head rest 6. I provide also a vertical narrow front piece 7 secured at the sides to said middle piece, and thence passing upwardly and around the back of the tray frame, hereinafter described, and the main frame, thence downwardly below said frames, thence upwardly above said frames forming a loop 8 for the frames, thence horizontally over said tray frame forming a cover 9 therefor, thence around the front and sides of said tray frame, the overlapping parts being secured together by stitching or otherwise. Secured to the middle part centrally in front is a flap 10 adapted to be buttoned or otherwise secured to the front part and to lie between the legs of the Specification of Letters Patent.

baby to hold him in the swing, his feet projecting through openings 11. Attached to the corners of the main frame are suspending straps 12. Spaced apart a considerable distance above the main frame is a strap dis tender 13 of less area than the main frame formed from a single piece of wire having its ends joined together in any convenient manner, as by locking loops 1 1 and being provided with four strap receiving loops 15. The straps pass through said loops and the distender is fastened in place by means of bands 16 secured to the straps above and below the loops. The two straps on each side may be brought together at the top around a supporting ring 17. The front of the tray is connected to the suspending straps by brace straps 18 and the head rest is connected directly to the back suspending straps. The seat has its four corners cut away to provide open spaces 19 to permit the ends of the suspending straps to be secured to the main frame. The head rest should be high enough to serve as a support for the babys head whenever he leans backwardly. The tray consists preferably of a frame 20 made of a piece of wire bent into rectangular form and provided with a suitable covering. It forms a convenient support for hands, food and playthings.
To fold the device for storage or shipment the main frame is pressed down upon the flexible seat. The tray is then turned upwardly and over onto the main frame. The suspending straps are then dropped down, the head rest folding inwardly over the main frame and the distender resting upon the tray and head rest and lying wholly within the area of the main frame, thus making a very compact uniform package.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a main frame of bent wire, a flexible seat secured thereto, a tray of bent wire pivotally secured to the main frame and free to fold upwardly or downwardly, suspending straps secured to the main frame and flexible brace straps secured to the front of the tray and to the front suspending straps.
2. In a device of the character described, a main frame of bent wire, a flexible seat secured thereto, a tray of bent wire pivotally secured to the main frame and free to fold upwardly or downwardly, suspending straps secured to the mam frame, flexible brace straps secured to the front of the tray and to the front suspending straps and a head rest secured to the seat and to the back suspending straps.
3. In a device of the character described,-
rest, a front piece secured at its sides to the middle piece and terminating in a tray cover, a tray framepivotally secured to the main frame by said front piece and cover,
suspending straps attached to the main frame and brace straps connecting the front of the main frame to the suspending straps.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALBERTA MARTIN.
