UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. ACHERT. OF CINCINNATI. OHIO. J SSIGNOB TO THE UNITED STATES PRINTING AND LITHOGRAPH COMPANY. OF CINCINNATI. OHIO, A CORPORA- TION OF OHIO.
DISPLAY-SUPPORT.
Patented Jan. 1, 1918.
Application filed February 19. 1917. Serial No. 149,422.
To all 'llll-Ollb it may concern.-
lie it known that l, Wmawu K. Arm-arr, a citizen of the United gtal'es of America. and resideiit of Cincinnati, in the count of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful IllllllOYGllltllt in Display- Supports, oi which. the following is a specification.
An object of my intention is to produce an improved cardboard display support for supporting tires firmly in an upright position.
This and other objerts are attained in the displa support (lestrilud in the following specification and illustrated in the :\(('()lllpanying drawings, in whichi Figure l is a pers nretire riew of my inn proved display support with a tire. shown fragmentally, lilOlllllWl therein.
Fig. 2 is a plan ii'ew. of a cardbmtrd blank from which a display support embddyin my invention is adapted to be COIIStlllLtH.
1 Fig. 3 is a fragmental side view of my i|nproved tire support.
Fig.4 is an end elevation of my improved tirc support.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 3. I
My improved display support consists of a cardboard blank of the shape disclosed in Fig. 2, having sides tiand 7 connected by inner wallsS and 9' and by bottoin portions 10 and 11, end flaps 12 and 13 and end flaps 14 and 15, being provided for retainin the inner walls and the sides in their fol ed positions. The joints between the sides 6 and 7 and the inner walls 8 and 9 are forined by lines of scoring 16 and 17, and the joints between the inner walls-8 and 9 and the bottom portions 10 and'll are formed by lines of scoring 18 and 19,sc0ring 16 and'17 permitting of the folding of sides 6 and 7 with relation to inner walls 8. and Sin a directionf'bpposite tothe folding permitted by scoring 18 and 19 of the inner walls 8 and 9 with relation to the respective portions 10 and 11 of the bottom. Portions 1.0- and 11 in turn are connected and adapted to-be folded with relation toone another upon a line of scorin 20 a reinforcing strip 21 of. fabrio'is, er
d for a, purpose to be hereinafter more lly set forth. End flaps '12 and 13 and- end flaps 14 and 15 are adapted to be folded'with relation to sides 6 and 7 .hpon
lines of scoring 21, 22, 23 and 2%- which permoving sides 6 and 7. The end flaps 12, 13, H and 15 are provided with respective apertures 25, 2G, 27 and 28, apertures 25 andQG being located to register with one another when the support is folded, for the purpose of receiving a fastener 29"such as disclosed in Fig. I-l. apertures L7 and 28 also being adapted to register when the support is folded to reeehe a similar fastening device.
in folding the support, the inner walls. 8 and 9 and the bottom portions 10 and 11 are folded between sides 6 and 7 in a depmiding position. as disclosed in Fig. End flaps 19 and 13 are then folded at right angles to sides 6 and 7 and apertures 25 and 26 are brought into registration with one. another. A fastener 29. such as disclosed in Fig. 3, is now passed through the-registering apertures. End flaps 14' and 15 are then gfolded at right angles to sides 6 and 7 and apertures 27 and 28 are brought into registration with one another, a fastener 29 Being passed through these registering apertures to secure the flaps in their folded positions. The display support is non-"in condition to receive a tire to be supported thereby.
As disclosed in Fig. 4 the bottom cijlges of the flaps 12, i3. 14 and 15 are out. at such an angle with relation to their side attaching edges. that when folded. as disclosed in Fig. l. the space hetwjveen the upper ed of the sides will be small enough to grasp the smallest sizedtir'es, to be su Jportcd thereby. The free edge-s30, 31, 32 and 33 of the flaps, are curved sotlhat when the flaps are folded es will'cor form to' the contour of the the ed g tire. he t re is support-ed'bv placingit between these-curved edges a-n allowing it to rest upon-thelbotto'rn portions 10 and 11. Larger ,S" ell tires are accommodated by ppeiedges of the sides 6 and 7 apart as sensed in dotted lines in Fig. 4, so that the tire may be placed between them. The weight of these larger sizes is such as to bring thenpper edges of the sides and the icnrved edges of the flaps into tighter gripping engagement with the sides of the tire than occurs when smaller sized tires are supported. This is essential for tires of larger sizes in that it is necessary, owing to 2&1; Weight and bulk, that they are suppo more firmly. Thus the tire itself acts direotly'upon the displa support for providing its own'firmness 0 support. Because of the line of scorin 20 between portions 10 and .11., the weig t of the tire will cause these portions to fold with relation to one another as disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 5
"to bring the inner walls 8 and 9 into engage- .inen-t with the sides of the-tire. The weight of the tire will also exert a downward pull upon the top edges of the sides 6 and 7 and te'ntl to' bring these edges together and consedulently bring the curved edges 30 to 33 inclusive into gripping engagement with the slirftice of the tire. Thus the tire will be firmly supported in an upright position.
The sides of the display support afford spaces upon which advertisements may be placed and an additional advantage is that the support may be unfolded and placed in its flattened condition as disclosed in Fig. 2, thus enabling great numbers of supports to be carried and stored away without occupying a large amount of space. The support is light. can be made of cardboard of medium weight, is cheap to manufacture, and also is amply strong for the purpose for which it is designed.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim is: i
1. g A. display support comprising oppositely disposed'sides, oppositely disposed end flaps attached to opposite edges of the sides, adapted to .be connected to form ends extending from side to side, a bottom. and inner walls extending between the bottom and tops of the sides. said sides, end flaps, bottom, and walls being formed integrally and suitably distinguished from each other by scoring.
In a dis 'ilay support, the combination oi. a bottom. sides located on each side of the bottom, inner walls connecting the bottom and sides. end flaps secured to opposite end edges of the sides, adapted. to be pivot-.
ally connected. to form ends extending from side to side, whereby the sides will move into gripping engagement with an object located in the support when the object isplaced between them.
3.111 combination in a display support, a bottom, sides, inner walls connecting the bottom and top edges of the sides, end flaps secured to opposite end edges of the sides,
adapted to be connected to: form ends having their side engaging edges converging from their bottoms to. their tops to hold the sides at the inclination of the inclined edges of the end flaps, and to hold the walls substantially parallel to one another and at right angles to the supporting surface of the support, whereby a tire receiving space is provided between the walls.
4. In ,a tire support the combination of inner walls, a bottom between the inner walls, sides joining the inner walls, and end flaps secured to opposite end edges of the sides, adapted. to be pivotally connected, .whereby the sides will more into gripping engagementwith an object located in the support when the object. is placed between them, the inner walls being adapted to be held in en gagement with the. object located between them by its weight.
5. A display support comprising oppositely disposed sides, oppositely disposed end flaps attached to opposite edges of the sides, adapted to be pivotally connected to form ends extending from side to side, a bottom having a series of portions adapted to be folded with relation to one another, and inner walls extending between the bot.- tom and tops oi the sides. wl'iereby the sides will more into gripping.engagen icnt'. with an object locatedin the support and where by the inner walls will be moved into engagement with the sides of the object when the object contacts the bottom.
6.111 combination in a display support, a bottom consisting of a series of portions adapted to be folded with relation to one another, sides, inner walls connecting the bottom and top edges of the sides, end flaps attached to opposite end edges of the sides, adapted to ,be pivotally connected to form ends extending from side to side and having their side engaging edges converging from their bottoms to their tops, whereby the top edges of the sides will move into gripping engagement with an object located in the support, and whereby the inner walls will more into substantially parallel positions with relation to one another and into engagement with the sides of the object when the object engages the bottom to cause its portions to fold with relation to one another.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto WILLIAM K. ACHIERT. Witnesses:
