To all who/n t may concern:
Be it known that T, CHARLES T. MILLER, a citizen'ofet-he United States, residing at Macoinin 'the county'of Bibb and State of Georgia,V have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing-Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in flushing valves and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improvedvalve slidably engaged with the outlet ypipe cfa tank and provided'vwitli means whereby a Siphon is created upon -downward movement beingimpar'ted'to the valve.
vThe invention consists in the details of construction and inthe combination" and arrangement ofthe several parts of my improved valve whereby certain important advantages are i'ittain'ed and ythe de'vlice is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood. I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in perspec tive illustrating in detail the means coacting with the lever for depressing the valve.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, T denotes a tank which may be of any desired configuration and constructed of any suitable material, and l denotes a delivery or outlet pipe in communication with the interior of the tank T through the medium thereof and terminating at its inner end a predetermined distance above the bottom of the tank T, and said inner or extended portion of the pipe l is surrounded by the sleeve 2 affording a chamber a adapted to contain a sealing medium S, preferably mercury.

Extending through a wall of the tank T and rotatably supported thereby is a shaft 7, the inner portion of the shaft 7 being provided with a rock arm 8 adapted to contact with the arm or 1end port-ion of the lever 4, with which the poise 5 coacts, while the outer end of the shaft 7 is provided with an operating member 9. By this arrangement it will be perceived that the requisite rocking movement may be imparted, to the lever t in order to depress the member 3 and leg 6, and that the shaft 7 will also serve to limit the upward movement of the member 3 and the leg 6 under the influence of the poise 5.
It is preferred that the lever i have an end portion loosely directed through an eye member 10 carried by and extending above the member 3 in order to provide the requisite connection between the lever 4.- and said member.
It will be noted that when the lever l is depressed, that the Siphon formed by the arms 3 and 6 will be positively forced down beneath the water to such an extent that about one-half of the water in the tank is assisted in its liow by the action of gravity, thus making a much easier siphonic action. Further, it is to be seen and noted that the outlet pipe is formed practically in two sections, namely, the section 2 and the section 3, the section 2 having double walls forming the sealing cup S and between which double walls the r`lower end of the section 3 operates.
The section 3 does not touch the double walls of the section 2, but has free movement in the mercury forming the sealing medium between these walls. There is no liability of the siphon striking therefore or becoming jammed, but the siphon will immediately rise after its depression. 1
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a valve constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of Some change and modiication without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting` myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim: y
l. A flushing apparatus comprising a tank, a siphon having an inlet leg and an outlet leg, the outlet leg being made in two sections, one section being connected to the tank and formed with double upwardly extending walls providing a sealing cup, containing liquid sealing material, the other section having sliding engagement in said cup and dipping into said sealing material, and manually actnatable means for positively depressing theV inlet leg and the upper section of the outlet leg of the siphon.
A flushing apparatus including a tank having' an outlet pipe, extending upward within the tank and formed with double walls providing a sealing cup having theren in relatively heavy liquid sealing material, a siphon having an outlet leg extending downward between the double walls and into the sealing material and having an inlet leg connected to the upper end of the outlet leg, a lever positively engaged with the siphon whereby the siphon shall move vertically with an oscillation of the lever, means urging the lever to a position where the upper portion of the siphon is above the level of liquid in the tank, and manually operable means for depressing that end of the lever connected to the siphon.
