The object of the invention is to provide a very strong machine frame having a base which will be practically free from pockets and places where dirt and rubbish may ae-- cumulate, and which will have a symmetrical massive finished appearance.
I'will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one practical embodiment of the invention and will enable others to adapt and use the same for'various machines, and
summarize in the claims the features and constructions of parts for which protection is desired.

The frame as shown is composed of a base member 1, side members or housings 2, and a crown or top member 3. V 1 The base member 1 isapproximately H- shaped in plan view, and has a body portion 1 having depending side flanges 1; at each end of this body portion are leg members 1 which are preferably angular or tapered, viewed from the sides of the frame, (see Fig. 1) being wider at bottom than at top.
These legs are hollow, and the outer end walls 1 of the body also form the outer end walls of the adjacent legs; such legs having inner walls 1 and outer side walls 1. The side walls 1 connect the walls 1" and 1 and cover the space between said walls and prevent any dirt or rubbish dropping between the walls 1 and 1 and collecting in the legs.
The Walls 1 of the body merge into the walls 1? of the legs so that viewed from below (see F ig. 4) the base is hollow, but viewed from above (see 7 Fig. 3) the base appears solid; and viewed from the side or end the base alsoappears solid (see Figs. 1 and 2).
On the lower end and outer face of each leg is a boss l which is bored for the passage of the usual hold-down bolts (not shown) by which the frame is'rigidly fas tened to a foundation. These bosses are cast on the outer-extremity of each leg at the lower end'thereof and are easily accessi ble; whereas in the ordinary type of frames the legs are hollow and the securing bolts are arranged between the side walls of thelegs, which are open on their outer surfaces and being open form pockets which permit the accumulation of dust and'dirt; and accessto the nuts on the fasteningbolts in such construction is troublesome. In my base while the legs'are hollow, they present externally solid appearances and no pockets are formed for dust, etc., to collect and the anchor bolts engaging bosses 1 are always readily accessible.
Openings are formed inthe top ofthe base adjacent the cornersfthereof for the passage of tie-bolts 4 hereinafter referred to, and these openings are surrounded on their lower ends by sleeves or housingsl which are formed integral with the base, all the parts of the base being cast integral so as to make it strong and solid. Viewed from the top, side or front the base presents a massive solid appearance, butviewed from below, as indicated in Fig. 4, it is hollow.
Theside members 2 of the frame while presenting a solid appearance are preferablyf cast hollow, as shownybut the side walls thereof are united and braced by an internal centrally disposed vertical partition 2 (Fig. 3). The upper and lower ends of these pieces may have transverse openings as at 2 to give clearance, rendering the side frames approximately H-shaped in appear-' ance. In the side walls of the lower openings 2", seeFigs. 1 and 5, are apertures 2 which permit access to the tie rods 4, to enable the rods to be heated with a torch or other suitable means, in the event of the frame having to be'taken apart for any reason after the tie rods have been shrunk inipplace. The side members 2 may be provided with ribs-2 on;thelower ends engaging corresponding grooves 1 on the top of the base to prevent lateral, movement of the side members on the base. Transverse movement of the side members on the basemay be prevented by keys 5 engaging corresponding grooves in the lowerend of the sidemembers and top of the base asindicated in Fig. 1. t
The crown or top member 3 is adaptedto rest upon and connect the upper ends of the side members 2 and is arch-shaped, viewed from the side, and is preferably hollow, but presents externally a solid appearance; its ends are provided with halfbearing members 3 which are complemental to the halfbearing members 2 on the side frames so that when the frame is assembled the parts 2 and 3 together form hearings or housings for the bushings of the bearings of the main shaft of the machine. As shown four tie-bolts are employed, two at each side of themachine'; and these tiebolts'extend through the sleeves 1*" in the base upward through the side members 2 and through the sleeves 3 .011 the crownmember, and may be secured both above and below by nuts 4*, r in the usual manner.

A machine frame comprising a base composed of a hollow body portion having projecting legs tapered outwardly from top toward the bottom and open on the inside, the end walls of the legs uniting with the end and side walls of the base; side members each having an internal vertically dispOsed partition integral therewith, and an arched top member provided with internal integral leeves at its ends; and tie-bolts extending through the side members and engaging the sleeves in the top and base members, substantially as described.

A machine frame comprising a base member composed of a hollow body portion having outwardly projecting legs, said legs being open on their inner sides, the side walls of the legs uniting with the front and rear walls of the base, and each leg having an external boss at its lower end for engagement of the anchor-bolts; side members each having an internal vertically disposed partition integral therewith, and a half-bearing for a shaft journal at its upper end; and an arched top member provided with integral sleeves at each end for the passage of the bolts; and tie-bolts extending through the side members and engaging the sleeves in the-ton and base members, substantially as described.

A machine frame comprising a base member composed of ahollow body portion having outwardly projecting hollow legs'rat each corner, said legs being open on their inner sides, the side walls of the legs uniting with the front and rear walls of the base said base being approximately H-shaped in plan; and each leg having an external boss at its lower end for engagement of the anchor-bolts; side members each having an internal vertically disposed partition integral therewith, transverse openings adjacent its ends, and a half-bearing for a shaft journal at its upper end; and an arched top member provided with internal integral sleeves at each end for the passage of the bolts; and tie-bolts extending through the side members and engaging the sleeves in the top and base members, substantially as described.
15. For a press frame, a hollow side member having a transverse opening in its lower end and apertures in the side walls of said opening to permit access to the tie-rods, substantially as described.
