Description
S. HUSSEY. Improvement in Hide and Pulling Mills.
Patented April 2,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE- SYLVANUS HUSSEY, OF GOWANDA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND SELLEN, ADAMS 86 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lNvHlDE AND FULLING MILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,135, dated April 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. I, SYLvANUs HussEY, of the town of Gowanda, in the county of Oattaraugus "and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Full-- ing and Hide Mill, of which the following is a specification:
Nature of the Invention.
General Description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation in cross-section. Fig. 2 is a perspective, partly in section, of the back and bottom pieces.
A is the bed piece; B, the curved slotted guides of the levers a a of the beaters O O. The slotted guides are provided with rubber packing or cushions to deaden the fall of the levers when there is not enough cloth in the mill to receive the full stroke of the beaters. D is the cam-wheel which operates the beaters. 12 represents a chamber, which is cast or formed in the bed piece, making part of the same, to which steam is to be introduced through suitable pipes. To the end of this bed piece is hinged or otherwise arranged a .curved adjustable back, E, having also cast or formed in its back or rear a steam-chamber, e, the object of both being to apply heat through the iron bed or back piece to assist the beaters in fulling the cloth or softening the hides. Making the bed and back pieces in two parts produces an important effect-via, to permit of the adjustment of the back, which is accomplished by hingingit to the bed piece, (shown at e,) and by back bolts d d, which pass through the side pieces F of the frame, which hold the back at any angle desired. This adjustment allows the operator to turn the cloth or hides, by the action of the beat ers, faster or slower, as they may require, and to turn hides and cloths of different grades as regularly and evenly as though they were all alike. Heavy cloths and hard flint hides require, in order to be worked equally well, the back of the mill to be at a diiferent pitch or angle than light cloths or soft hides. The shape or peculiar curve of this adjustable back E is also a very important feature of my invention, and it has been a work of great difficulty to arrive at the right form, so that the cloth or hides will gradually and regularly, by the action of the beaters, be turned over and over, so that each and every part of the cloth or hides will, in turn, receive the strokes. A slight change in the curve or shape of the back would result either in the contents of the mill not turning over at all, or, after turning a time, they would wedge fast in the bottom of the mill, which would necessitate stopping it and readjusting its contents. The peculiar form of this back piece E and its adjustment to the bed piece A cause the beaters to turn the contents of the mill completely over with a few or many strokes, at the option of the operator. Another great advantage of my mill is, that it fulls cloth evener than any other with which I am acquainted. It is also selfacting, requiring neither tending nor watching. Its use for softening hides will be found very important, as they can be manipulated and softened better and in amuch shorter space of time than with ordinary mills, besides doing away entirely with hand-labor. When used for this purpose, iron pins will be inserted in the heads of the beaters.
The entire mill will be made of metal, which I believe has never before been employed with a fulling-mill, and which will greatly add to its strength and durability.
What I claim is- 1. I claim the hinged adjustable back, provided with the steamehamber 0, arranged and operating, in connection with the bed piece A and beaters G O, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. I claim the bed piece A, provided with the heating-chamber b, in combination with the hinged back E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. I claim the hinged curved back E, provided with the steam-chamber c, in combination with the bed piece A and its heating- In witness whereof I have hereunto signed chamber b, substantially as and for the purmy name in the presence of two subscribing pose set forth. witnesses.
4. I claim the bed piece A, heating-chamber S. HUSSEY. b, beaters 0, link a, and Wheel 1), in combination with the hinged back E and steam-eham- Witnesses: ber c,-a-rranged and operating substantially as J. R. DRAKE, described. WALTER A. SELLEN.
