BED-PAN.
Specification of I.etters Patent. Patented .Dec. 25, 1917.,
Application filed January 17, 1917. Serial No. 142,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORA WELSH, a citizen of the United States, residingat lVater ville, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a bed pan and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a compartively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a body portion having an inclined top rcmovably secured thereon and provided with a pear shaped opening providing a very etlicient and comfortable seat for a person while in use and which \vill prevent any of the contents from spilling therefrom when the device is accidentally tipped 0r tilted while in use.
A further object of this invention is to providea top having a handle and of such shape as to lit the opening in the top, so that the device may be rradily closed after being used to render a sanitary device.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the followingdescription and accompanying drawin in which:
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the top.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety, the body of my improved bed pan consisting of a l'mttOIIl 2 having'upstanding walls 3 formed thereon. A top 4 has a downwardly depending flange 5 formed thereon which is re-- celved by the upstanding walls 3. The top 4 is provided with a substantially pear shaped opening 6, the smaller end of which opens outwardly. The edge of the top 4 that forms the pear shaped opening 6 is bent downwardly to form a flange 7, which provides a smooth and comfortable seat to the user. The top 4.- is provided with an upwardly inclined portion 7 at its rear end while its sides incline downwardly to form an inclined seat or rest for the user.
A substantially pear shaped cover 8 has downwardly depending flanges 9 formed thereon adapted to be received within the substantially pear shaped opening 6 of the top 4, whereby the device may be entirely inclosed forming a sanitary bed pan. Upstanding arms 10 are secured to the cover 8 in spaced relation and are connected together by a suitable hand grip or handle 11, whereby the cover 8 may be readi y removed and replaced upon the top l when desired.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that a sanitary bed pan has been provided, which can be readily assem bled for cleansing purposes, and each part being so constructed that all foreign matter can be readily cleaned therefrom when desired.
'lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, con' d -alion and arrangement of parts may he made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
\Vhat is claimed is:
A bed pan comprising a bottom, upstanding flanges formed on said bottom, a top, downwardly extendin flanges formed on said top and receive by the first named flanges ta support the top, saiz imp being inchnad downwardly and having a pear si' ped npening therein, saizz 0pm1ing=exthmu h one ege of the to and m ciosesl by the first named flanges, and 1 ghaped cover closing said opening.
a zm sm In testimony whereof I affix my sigha ture in presence of We Witnesses. FLORA WELSH. Nitnesse C. W SHQEMAKER, SUSAN SHOEMAKER.
