FORM-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES A. LYNCH and Jonx L. ANDERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake, State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Form-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a form clamp for use in concrete work, and designed for holding in place the concrete form during the pouring and setting of the concrete.
It is the object of the invention to provide a novel and improved form clamp of simple and inexpensive construction, which is readily and effectively applicable to a reinforcing or other rod extending out of the form, whereby to hold the form firmly in place, the clamp being engageable with the rod to bear against the form.
The present clamp embodies but two parts or members, one to be slipped on to the rod or wire and bear against the form, and the other to hold the former in place against slipping on said rod, the two parts'or members being assembled in a novel manner to fulfil their office in a thoroughly eificient and practical manner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a. front view of the clamp.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, with the wedge shown in section.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a washer or plate 1 provided at one side with an outstanding loop-shaped guide 2, and the central portion of the washer 1 and yoke portion of the guide 2 are provided with alining apertures or openings 3 and 4, respectively, sufficiently large to readily receive the reinforcing or other rod 5 which extends from the form 6, thus enabling the washer to be readily slipped over said rod against the form.
The guide 2 is provided with an opening 7 extending therethrough from one side to the other and of tapered form from end to end, said opening being of substantial triangular outline and provided at one side with a rounded portion or seat 8, the wall of which extends throughan arc of slightly over 180. The opposite portion of the opening 7 is relatively wide and offset, as at 9, beyond the apertures 3 and 1, said opening extending between said apertures. The seat 8 provides a restricted throat 10.
The second part of the device embodies a wedge 11 tapered from one end to the other, and provided along one edge with awidened portion or bead 12 sea-table and slidable snugly within the seat, and of slightly greater width than the throat 10, to hold the bead seated in said seat and guided for longitudinal movement therein obliquely of the guide 2. The opposite edge of the wedge 11 is preferably provided with longitudinal serrations 13 to bite the rod 5, and said wedge has a rounded rib 14 adjacent to the serrated edge to bear slidably against the yoke portion of the guide 2 adjacent to the apertures 4. The wedge 11 has a pin 15 orequivalent retaining element at its narrower end, applied after the edge is assembled with the guide 2, whereby to prevent the wedge from being, accidentally withdrawn or removed from the guide, thereby holding the two parts assembled. In using the clamp, the washer 1 can be readily slipped on to the rod 5 and moved against the form 6, when the wedge 11 is retracted. Then, by hammering or otherwise forcing the wedge 11 through the guide, the bead 12 in sliding along the oblique seat 8 will force the serrated edge 13 parallel to itself toward the rod 5, and said serrated edge will, therefore, be brought against the rod within the opening 7. The wedge in being driven between the seat 8 and rod will bend the rod slightly within the offset portion 9 of the opening, thereby serving to lock the washer on the rod, and the wedge 11 will lie in an inclined or oblique position transversely thereof, with its serrated edge farther from the washer 1 than the bead 12. Consequently, should the washer tend to slide on the rod due to the pressure against the form 6, a toggle action will be provided, in addition to the wedge action, to resist such movement of the washer, since any tendency of the washer to slide, will result in, the wedge 11 swinging on the bead 12 as a.
pivot, the washer moving toward the serrated edge 13, which will only serve to tighter grip the rod 5 between the wedge and that portion of the guide 2 confronting the serrated edge of the wedge. In thismanner, after the wedge has been driven into place, the clamp is firmly held on the rod, to hold the form in place, but by driving the wedge to move the smaller end thereof toward the guide, this will release the device so that it can be readily withdrawn for sub s'equent use.
Having thus described the invention, what i claimed as new is:
1. A form clamp embodying two parts, one to fit upon a rod against a form, and the otherarranged to slide longitudinally and wedge between the first mentioned part and rod and shift transversely to bind the rod.
2. A form clamp embodying two parts, one to fit on a rod against a form, and the other being so engaged with the first mentioned part to wedge into engagement with the rod and exert a toggle action thereon.
8. A form clamp embodying two parts, one to it on a rod, and the other being so engaged with the first mentioned part to wedge into engagement with the rod and swing relatively to the first mentioned part to bind the rod by a toggle action.
4:. A form clamp embodying a washer to fit upon a rod, and a wedge slidably engaged with the washer to engage said rod at'an acute angle therewith.
5. A form clamp embodying a washer having an outstanding guide and adapted to fit on a rod, and a wedge slidable in said guide to contact with the rod.
6. A form clamp embodying a washer havingan outstanding guide provided with an opening, said washer and guide having registering apertures for the reception of a.

9. A form clamp embodying a washer having an outstanding guide provided with an opening having a rounded seat, and a wedge having a bead fitting 1n said seat for liding and swinging movements.
10. A form clamp embodying a washer having an outstanding guide, said washer and guide having alining apertures to receive a rod, the guide having an opening extending between said apertures and provided with a rounded seat and restricted throat, the opposite portion of the opening being oflse't beyond said apertures, anda wedge having a bead at one edge fittingiin said .seat for sliding and swinging movements, the other edge of the wedge being serrated to engage the rod, and the smaller edge of the wedge having means for preventing its withdrawal from the guide.
