Be it known that I, OLIVER M. EDWARDS, a-citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Sash-Holding Means, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to sash lholding ,means which lis particularly simple incon- -of va double window embodying my invention, the contiguous portion of the window frame being also shown.

I have here shown my invention as embodied in a double sash window, the sashes ybeing provided with holding means tending 1 and 2 designate the window sashes; 3 theY window frame in which the sashes move vertically.
The sashes 1, 2 are similar in construction and in so far as this invention is concerned, one of the sashes may be eliminated. These sashes 1 and 2 move at their opposite edges in guideways 4 formed in the window frame 3, and a stop or parting strip 5 is arranged between the sashes at the opposite edges thereof. As the opposite edges or sides oi'L the windows are alike in construction as shown in my pending application referred to, I have illustrated but a portion of one side of the windows.

VThe windowl illustrated in Fig. 3 is formed of thin material as sheet metal so that the sash is hollow and has OuterandiImer thicknesses ot material, or walls which confine a space between them in which; the vsash iy The sash holding means 'n include units located at opposite sides ofV each sash near the lower edge thereof as 'shown in my pend- Each unit vcomprises a the outer end thereof at the edge of the sash, an element as a base plate 7 mounted .on the face of the sash and closing the` opening in said tace, and having a bearing 8 extending through the opening in said front face of the sash and into the recess or cavity, the bearing 8 being located in alinement with the bearing 6, outer 1 and inner rock shaft sections 9, 10 ournaled in the bearings 6 and 8 respectively,the sections having coupling means on their contiguous ends which interlock and unlock by a relative axial movement of the shaft sections, a holding member as a detent 11 mounted on the outer shaft section 9 at the edgeof the sash, and operating means located on the face of the sash and connected to the shaft section 10 to rock the same in the opposite direction. -As here shown, the bearing 6 is inserted or sunkinto the edge of the sash and is formed with a sink or depression 12- inwhich-the detentll is located, and the portion Yof the face of the sash opposed to the stop 5 or other stop with which the detent coperates, and one side ot the sink 12 are removed so that the detent can coact with shoulders as 13 on this stop.
The means coupling the shaft sections 9 and 10 together is here shown as interfitting or lapping parts, 14, 15 on said shaft sections 9 and 10, and a sleeve 16 encircling the lapping part, the sleeve 16 and the portion of the shaft 10 therein forming a non-circular socket which is complemental to the end 14 ot' the Shaft 9.
r1`he operating means comprises a pinch lever 23 having its handle 24 opposed to a handle 25 projecting from this base plate,
this lever 23 extending through a hole in Y the base plate and into the cavity or recess and having a hub or bearing 26 which 1s :keyed 'at 27 to the shaft section 10.
Obviously, by ymoving the pinch lever 23 upwardly toward the stationary handle the shaft sections 9, 10 will be rocked in suchV a direction as to carry the detent 11 out of engagement with a shoulder 13.
These shaft sections are moved in 'the opposite direction to press the detent engaged with the shoulders 13 and to press said detentagainst the stop 5 in order to force the sash away from the stop 5, by a vspring 28 encircling one of the shaft sections and anchored at one end to one of the bearingsand connected at its other end to said section.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4,' the spring -28 encircles the shaft section 10 and is anchored 4at one end to the bearing 8 and is connected at its other end to the hub or the bearing 26 of the pinch lever 23.
The window sashes are also provided with frictional holding devices 33 as described in Vmy pending application.
In operation, and in assembling the parts ofv the sash holding means and the sash, the bearing with one shaft section therein is inserted through the-outer end of the recess or cavity, the element or base plate placed in position in the front of the sash with the inner bearing and shaft section inserted through the opening in the face of the sash,
