Description

A56. JORVE.
CLAMPING FRAME FOR HOLDING PLOWSHARES.
Patented D60. 25, 1917?.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 31 AXEL G. JORVE, OF ROTHSAY, MINNESOTA.
CLAMPING-FRAME FOR HOLDING PLOWSHARES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedDec. 25, 1917.
App1ication filed m 31, 1917. Serial No. 172,134.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL G. JoRvn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rothsay, in the county of WVilkin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping-Frames for Holding Plowshares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clamping frames for holding plow shares in shape while hardening and cooling.
The object of m invention is to produce a frame for clamping and holding plow shares after they have been molded and heated and while they are cooling to prevent them warping out of shape. A further object thereof is to roduce a device of said character arrangec l to conveniently grasp and clamp the share while hot and rigidly hold its edges until it has sufficiently cooled and set, and which may be adjusted to shares of different and various sizes; and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and eflicient device of said character than has heretofore been attained.
T 0 these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a face view,
Fig. 2 is a reverse view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate longitudinal frame plates carried on the pivoted arms 3 and 4: and 5 and 6 hereinafter described.
Each of said frame members comprise an outer plate 7 and an adjacent parallel plate 8 somewhat wider than the outer plate to provide the inwardly projecting flange 8. Both plates are made of rigid material such as chilled iron. Said plates are bolted to the back plate 9 with the pivoted clamping members interposed between same to form a slot or groove 11 to receive the outer longitudinal edges of the share as shown in dotted lines,
The frame plates or members are carried on the pivoted arms 3, 4, 5 and 6 by which they are spread or retracted by the operating arms 15 and 16 extending from one pair of pivoted arms. The arms 5 and 6 are pivotally mounted on the rod 17 while the arms 3 and 4 are pivotally mounted intermediate of their ends on the ear B carried on the rod 17. On one end of said rod a coil spring 18 is carried to normally contract the opposite frame members. Said spring bears at its outer end against the nut A carried in the end of the rod 17, and at its opposite end bears against the ear B through which the pivot pin C, on which the arms 3 and 4 are also pivoted, passes. The tension of the spring tends to contract the arms 3, 4, 5 and 6, and as said arms are pivoted on the medial rod 17 and are of equal length between their pivotal points and connections with the frames 1 and 2, the frames remain parallel in expanded or closed positions, said rod 17 passes through an orifice in the ear B so that it is free to move with respect to pivot C.
For the purpose of locking the share in the slot 11 the pivoted clamps 19 are provided, which as before stated, are carried between the plates 7 and S and spaced apart from each other. Said clamps act as cams to engage the share and hold it in place. As shown their outer ends are connected by the rods 20 to facilitate their operation.
In use, the frames 1 and 2 are spread apart by the tong- like levers 3 and 4 to grasp the longitudinal edges of a plow share in the slot or groove 11 where it may be held more securely by the clamps 19. The frame members are normally held in closed position by the spring 18. While thus held the share may be dipped in water for cooling and prevented from warping by the rigidity of the frame members, and after being cooled, it may be easily released by again spreading the frames and releasing the clamps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A clamping frame for holding plow shares, comprising a pair of rigid longitudinal plates having a longitudinal groove in each, pivoted arms connecting said plates shares, comprising a pair of rigid longitudinal plates having a longitudinal groove in each, pivoted arms connecting said plates to permit their movement toward and from each other, aspring for normally holding said plates in closed position, and gripping 10 members carried in said grooved plates, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
