Specification of Letters Patent. l. Patented Dec. 18 191.7,
Application ledJanuary 3, 1917. Serial No. 140,437.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY L. MENDAL, a citizen of theV United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented anew and useful lVashboard, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to improvements in wasliboards whereby applying a plurality of cavities at one end of the board, the same can be utilized as a compress washer. This appliance may he added to an ordinary washboard, but more particularly to a washboard made with two parts, divided in center vertically., and rovided with standards on the sides of eac section, and connected by a hinged arrangement, in order to fold at will. When the boards are folded to be used as a compress washer, the standards are used as handles to perform the work of raising and lowering the device.
Although by the simple device herewith disclosed there can be provided a foldable appliance, made either of wood or metal on the same principle outlined in the drawings, producing the same results as specified, the main feature of the folding washboard is the reduction of the size to enable the operator to utilize the device within a small vessel or bucket.
The objects of my invention, are to provide a cheap, simple, and efficient combination washboard in order to wash fabrics, and clothing of a delicate texture without rubbing; also to prevent placing the hands in `too hot or soapy water, and to wash all heavy or other material quickly with little labor.
I attain these objects in the following description.
In describing my invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure (1) of drawings illustrates the device when used in the ordinary manner of washboards. Fig. (2) is a view of the reverse side of the device, also showing the sectional partit-ions or cavities, part 4 being omitted from one of the sections. Fig. (3) represents the washboard in position when folded ready for use. Fig. (4) is a perspective view of the device looking at the bottom thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description as indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
My combination wash board and pounder comprises a pairof hingedly connected sections designated A and B. The sections being identical in construction a description of one is thought to be sufcient. The sections comprise a plurality of standards 1 having the upper faces thereof extending diagonally upward. The front boards 3 are interposed between said standards adjacent the upper edges 2 having a diagonal arrangement and terminating adjacent the upper edges of the said standard. Rear board 4 is provided on the upper rear portion of said standard. A base board 5 is provided with apertures 6 interposed between said standards and the front and rear board thus forming a receptacle for soap and the like when the device is used as a wash board.
Partitions 7 are interposed between said standards having the outer edges thereof secured to the front and rear boards thus providing a plurality of pockets. Rubbing plates 8 are mounted in recesses extending longitudinally of the front edges of the standard presenting the desired surface for washing.
A plurality of cross bars 9 conforming in width with that of the standard is interposed therebetween at a point slightly above the center portion forming a chamber between the rubbing plate when the board is folded. A plurality of apertures 10 are provided at operative points of the standard for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
In use as a. Wash board the same may be used with the sections open thus presenting a double rubbing surface or if the receptacle in which the washing is to be accomplished is small the sections may be folded thus presenting a single rubbing surface. lVhen used as a pounder as particularly set forth in Fig. 4 the soap may be inserted within the receptacle formed by the cross bars when the sections are folded. It is obvious that during the pounding process the water will be poured through the openings 6 and. out through the apertures 10 thus agitating the water within the tub and giving the desired effect. My pounder is particularly adapted for'use in connection with the washing of fine fabrics where particular care is necessitated.
While I have herein illustrated and de scribed with a considerable degree of particularity constructional details of the machine embodying my invention, it is tofbe understood that the invention is not limited to the particular form and arrangement of theseveral parts Which may be modified Within a Wide range-Without departing Vfrom the essence of the invention, the construction shown and the description based thereon being intended fto be taken in an illustrativerather than av limiting sense.
