A. F. STURGEL.
ADJUSTABLE CHIMNEY JACK.
APPLBCATION min JULY 30.1911.
Patented Dec. 18,191?! I: s aw-E 3140c 41 for A.F, Z2uye z s apertures on one side oi the chimney and STATES PATENT OFFICE. mew ewe-e To all wj om it may concern-t,
Be it' u n" thritI, 'F. Sg'onosL, a citizenof the United States, at Lexington, in the county i-Fayette and State of Kentucky,"haiv'e"invented certain-new and e l m roveme ts i Adj st ble 0 1 1 ny Jzlcks' and 'I'do declare the faunas" to be afull, clear, and exact description '0 'the invention, such as will enable others of construction and in the arrangement of the several parts as described in the specification and claim and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in wlnch:
F i re 1 represents a perspective view, showing the application oi the ad ustable Jack.
Figs.- 2 and 3 are transverse sections taken I on line 2-2 and 33 of Fig.1 respectively.
' device ma The preferred embodiment of my invention as illustrated is shown applied to a chimney G in order that the 0 ject of the be readily seen.
The ad ustable chunney jack comprises a air of referablv flat bars or scaffold cards 1 ormed of wood or metal, and when formed of wood reinforced on their upper edges with metal strips 2, which are secured to the wooden boards by suitable fastening 1 elements. The bars are provided with a plurality' of alined apertures spaced at intervals rom theouter ends of said bars to- '.ward their centers for a purposeto be seen positioned on the opposite sides of a chimney,.
when inuse, and held in place by connecting them with a pair of clamping bolts 8 each having at one end. an eye or finger loop 4 and its other end threaded, each of said bolts attending rough a pair of alined I specification cffett ers iat cnt. i ace-earns rh es; seafarers-sass. I

For the purpose of supporting a workman 'si'lpp'drted adjacent the outer ends of the bars or boards 1 on the upper edges thereof. Secured to the lower face of each standing board or platform .7 is a fiat metal bar 8, spaced from the board, and having upwardly right-angularly bent ends 9 whose ends are bent outwardly in opposite directions to form attaching feet 10 which are secured to the board by anysuitable fastening elements.
The rightan ularlv bent ends 9 are pro vidcd intermediate their lengths with horizontally alined apertures adapted to be alined with any pair of the apertures in the bans or boards 1, and through which alincd apertures are adapted to pass bolts 11 each having on one end an eye or finger loop 12.
In operation the bars may be adjusted to a chimney of any size and at any height and held in position by tightening the clampin bolts 3, and the platforms 7 may be adjustc to any desired positions on the bars by removing the bolts 11, shifting the platforms and then replacing the bolts. TlllS method of mounting the platforms prevents any longitudinal movement of the platform or any tilting movement of the same, which would be caused by the outer edge 7 coming in contact with the sloping portion of the roof. Also this means of attaching the platform allows the distance between the bars to be varied owing to the. fact that the arms of the U-shaped bracket can be disposed between the bars or the bars can be laced between the arms of the bracket. 1: will therefore be seen that the distance between the bars can be greatly varied without affecting the attaching means of the platform.
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my improvedthe opposite sides of "a chi'mne mezins b'etweemt e platforms and thebars,
